Pundit says Man City have a player who has actually always been a natural goalscorer

Robbie Mustoe believes Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has always been a natural goalscorer.

Foden has always managed to register an impressive tally of goals during his senior career.

This season, the City attacker has scored 16 goals in all competitions while his tallies in the 2022/2023, 2021/2022 and 2020/2021 campaigns were 15, 14 and 16 respectively.

Robbie Mustoe says Phil Foden has always had a “natural eye for goal”

The Stockport-born attacker is destined to have his best goalscoring season in a City shirt, as he needs one goal to surpass his best-ever tally that he set in the 2020/2021 season.

Earlier this month, Pep Guardiola praised the Englishman for having his most “decisive” season in terms of winning games for his boyhood club by scoring goals and getting assists.

But being a goalscorer has always come naturally to Phil Foden, according to Robbie Mustoe.

“Phil Foden has stepped up his game this year to be an important, not only footballer and playmaker but a goalscorer. I’ve always said that about him”, he said on NBC Sports’ The 2 Robbies Podcast.

“He’s got a natural eye for goal, which always seems to gravitate him towards the penalty box and he looks to get off and he gets in a tap-in goal pretty much.”

Phil Foden is an adept finisher

The numbers certainly do not lie as Robbie Mustoe has made a fair observation about Phil Foden and his natural eye for goal.

This season, Foden has shown that he has ice running through his veins in front of goal.

The two finest examples of the 23-year-old’s composure in front of goal are the way he slotted the ball past Mark Flekken and Guglielmo Vicario against Brentford and Tottenham respectively in one-on-one situations.

Often, when a player has too much time before striking the ball, they tend to fluff their lines.

This season, in particular, Foden has also showcased that his striking of the ball is impeccable.

The decorated technician’s stormer of a strike from outside the box against Everton in his side’s 3-1 win this campaign stands out.

Similarly, Phil Foden’s rasping half-volley in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory against Nottingham Forest is another example.

Not only does Foden have an eye for goal but he also has the technique to execute finishes several other players perhaps would be unable to.
