Guardiola single out Man Utd Star who Man City must specially target in Derby

According to Metro, Pep Guardiola has highlighted the ‘exceptional’ Bruno Fernandes ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, emphasizing that his City side must neutralize the threat posed by the United captain, who can ‘always create something.’

Despite facing criticism following last weekend’s defeat to Fulham, Fernandes responded by providing an assist for Casemiro’s late FA Cup winner against Nottingham Forest midweek.

Although an injury doubt heading into the game, the Portugal international played the full 90 minutes at the City Ground, maintaining his remarkable record of never missing a game through injury since joining the club in January 2020.

United have only secured one victory in their last six encounters against City, who are in formidable form, with Erling Haaland netting five goals against Luton Town midweek.

Guardiola commended United’s captain ahead of the clash, acknowledging his ability to cause significant problems and highlighting him as a player City must contain on Sunday afternoon.

‘He is an exceptional player,’ Guardiola said. ‘Especially the consistency to play in every single game and in every single competition.’

Guardiola further praised Fernandes for his impact on the pitch, noting his proficiency in set pieces and connections with fellow attackers.

‘What can I say, he is a really, really important player,’ Guardiola added.

When questioned about his tactical approach to neutralizing Fernandes’ threat, Guardiola affirmed the importance of containing him, recognizing his ability to influence the game positively.

‘Of course, it always has to be like that.

Always he can be creating something,’ Guardiola remarked.

Amid City’s dominance over their rivals, Guardiola was asked if Fernandes and Luke Shaw would be the only United players he would consider for his City squad.

Guardiola dismissed the notion, stating, ‘That is football fantasy. I don’t like it.’
