Mark Schwarzer names the ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper he prefers between Ederson and Alisson

Former goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has named which goalkeeper he prefers out of Ederson and Alisson.

Manchester City and Liverpool have been great rivals over the last six years, with both clubs pushing each other to greatness.

Pep Guardiola’s side have had the better of it in the Premier League, winning five titles to Liverpool’s one, but the Merseyside outfit have twice pushed the race to the final day of the season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have tended to fair better in the cups, having knocked City out of the Champions League, and FA Cup and beating them in the Community Shield.

The great competition may end after this season when Jurgen Klopp leaves Anfield but there will be one last Premier League blockbuster, which could decide the title, this Sunday.

One of the many interesting facets of the rivalry has been that the clubs have possessed the country’s two best goalkeepers in Brazilian pair Ederson and Alisson.

Speaking on Football’s Greatest, Schwarzer said: “I think Alisson, Ederson, I rate them very, very highly.

“I think they are outstanding goalkeepers. And I think all round outstanding goalkeepers.

“I think Alisson is more the complete package from my perspective, from what I like as a goalkeeper.

“Ederson is kind of the newer version of the modern-day goalkeeper, in terms of outstanding with his feet.

“Very quick, very agile. That’s where I go back to the technical side of things.

“The actual art of goalkeeping, catching, positional play, is a modern-day version and possibly not as good as it used to be.”

Not much in it

Both goalkeepers have slightly different styles but both have been immense for their clubs over the years and both have a moment of madness in them, too.

There’s really not much to split them, though Ederson certainly has more in his trophy cabinet.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, they will be without their first-choice goalkeeper for Sunday’s massive match-up as he remains sidelined with an injury.

Liverpool currently have nine important players unavailable ahead of the match but still managed to win the Carabao Cup with a depleted squad.

Guardiola will not be underestimating Liverpool, especially with City’s poor record at Anfield.
