Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways after three straight defeats when they face Burnley away from home in the Premier League on Saturday.

Manager Erik ten Hag is under intense pressure from the British media with stories of dressing room unrest making the rounds.

The squad is currently decimated by injuries and the list is large enough to prepare a full XI, including the absence of first-choice wing backs.

The left-back was a major problem in the latter stages of the summer transfer window, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both out of action until November.

Ten Hag was forced to deploy Diogo Dalot as an emergency left-back in matches, but the subsequent injury to Aaron Wan-Bissaka saw the Portuguese move to the right-back position. After signing Brandon Williams on loan, United found themselves without an experienced left-back, prompting the club to sign Sergio Reguilon on deadline day.

The manager was given the opportunity to use academy graduate Alvaro Fernandez in the position, having returned to the team following an outstanding performance on loan at Championship side Preston North End.

He was selected in United’s pre-season squad and played in the first two games, but did not play for the United first team, suggesting he may not be ready to make the jump to the first team permanently.

With Champions League matches approaching, Ten Hag was aware that opportunities would be few and far between and believed it would be best for the young player to gain more experience.

United still believe in Alvaro Fernandez

Many clubs were interested in permanent contracts for the Spaniard, including La Liga club Granada, where he was eventually loaned. The player admitted his loan club did their best to agree a loan deal with an option to buy, but United firmly refused.

“Manchester United rejected it and no agreement was reached,” he told reporters at his official unveiling. This suggests that United still think highly of him and that a first-team place will be up for grabs at some point.

Playing for Granada, who are currently in the relegation zone, will be a big test and show how well equipped they are for top-level football at a time when the club is at risk of relegation.
