Erik ten Hag provides a fitness update on Sergio Reguilon after the Man Utd defender was substituted against Burnley

The Manchester United defender came off in the closing stages of Saturday’s win over Burnley.

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Sergio Reguilon was replaced due to illness in the closing stages of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Burnley.

The defender, making his third appearance for Manchester United since joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, came off after 79 minutes having previously received treatment on the pitch.

However, after the match, Ten Hag revealed that Reguilon’s withdrawal was not due to injury. “He was ill tonight and you can see the confidence that he wanted to play, and you can see the spirit in the team,” said the United manager. Reguilon played an important role in United’s well-organized defense at Turf Moor, particularly in the second half. His teammate Jonny Evans was named man of the match, but Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot also put in reliable performances.

It was a game that was decided in the dying minutes of the first half when Evans’ long-range pass to Bruno Fernandes was spectacularly palmed back into the goal. It was a rare moment of offensive quality in another disappointing offensive performance from Ten Hag.

The three points end United’s losing streak in away games this season – the Red Devils suffered defeats at Tottenham, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. It was also United’s third victory this season in the Premier League, moving them into eighth place in the table.

Ten Hag hopes Reguilon will not miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Crystal Palace. Due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, the Spaniard is the only senior left-back available.

Shaw and Malacia were among seven players who missed Saturday’s trip to Burnley, alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad. Jadon Sancho and Antony were also unavailable for non-football reasons.
