Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana set tongues wagging with a seemingly bizarre tactic during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper enjoyed arguably his best performance for United to date, facing 15 shots in the first half alone as Liverpool’s onslaught persisted. But the 28-year-old also drew attention for another reason, having been spotted lathering his goalkeeping gloves with a pot of Vaseline during a brief break in play.

Yet despite the confusion among viewers, Onana’s use of the petroleum jelly product is in fact a common method among Premier League goalkeepers. It is believed to improve their grip, making their gloves more sticky and aiding their handling in wet conditions.

But there are certain sports where possessing such an advantage is illegal. According to Betting, there are five sports which prohibit the use of Vaseline and similar lubricants. They are as follows:

Swimming – competitive swimming events in pools typically prohibit the use of Vaseline to maintain water clarity and prevent issues with oil residues.

Gymnastics – Vaseline or similar substances may be restricted in gymnastics competitions for safety and grip reasons.

Weightlifting – Athletes in weightlifting competitions may be prohibited from using Vaseline due to potential grip interference.

Judo and Wrestling – In combat sports like judo or wrestling, Vaseline on the body can be restricted to avoid slippery surfaces during grappling.
