Five important statistics spotted from Real Madrid 3-3 Manchester City

Real Madrid and Manchester City played out a thrilling match yesterday night, ending in a 3-3 tie in the first leg of their quarterfinal UEFA Champions League match.

With a superb free kick from Bernardo Silva, Man City seized the lead in just two minutes. However, an own goal by Ruben Dias gave Real Madrid a response 10 minutes later, and Rodrygo gave the home team the lead shortly after.

After two goals in the second half from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol gave Manchester City the lead again, Federico Valverde tied the score with an incredible volley to give Real Madrid the advantage.

It was an entertaining affair at the Santiago Bernabeu and went on to make history as it became only the second-ever knockout stage match in the Champions League to see three goals scored in the opening 14 minutes, after Man City v Tottenham in April 2019 (2-2 in 11 mins).

All of Manchester City’s goals last night came from outside the penalty box which meant that they became the first team to score three goals from outside the box in a Champions League away game against Real Madrid since at least 2003/04.

What it also meant was Real Madrid managed to lock down the threat of Erling Haaland on one more occasion, with Antonio Rudiger bossing the battle between the pair.

Haaland has now played more games (3) without scoring against Real Madrid than any other opponent in his Champions League career (8 shots, 6 on target in 269 minutes).

While Jude Bellingham did not have the best of the nights, Vinicius Jr. stood out for Real Madrid in attack, registering two assists for Rodrygo and Valverde’s goals.

The 23-year-old now has the second-highest number of assists in the Champions League since the start of the 2018/19 season (19), only behind Kylian Mbappe and Kevin De Bruyne (both 20).

The 3-3 result also meant that Real Madrid have not lost any of their last 27 home games in all competitions (W21 D6), their best unbeaten run at home since September 2013 (G47 W40 D7).

Rodrygo was one of the top performers as Real Madrid secured a goalscoring 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the Champions League.

There were question marks over Rodrygo’s future heading into the game. But the forward showed excellent commitment and teamed up well with Vinicius to cause problems for the Man City defence.

In light of Rodrygo’s performance against Man City, Fabrizio Romano has issued a crucial update on the player’s future at Real Madrid.

Will Rodrygo remain at Real Madrid?

As per the Italian transfer expert, there is a good feeling internally about Rodrygo. The club are happy with the player’s performances and commitment. The feeling, in fact, is mutual, with Rodrygo also happy at the Bernabeu.

This update from Romano comes on the back of initial uncertainty over Rodrygo’s future, especially with Real Madrid expected to sign Kylian Mbappe in the coming summer.

The Frenchman should significantly alter Rodrygo’s role in the team, as he likes to operate out wide and not centrally.

As a result, Rodrygo was linked with a move away from the Bernabeu. He was even closely linked with a move to the Premier League.

Rodrygo is happy

As per Romano, Rodrygo is happy at Real Madrid and wants to continue at the Bernabeu despite new signings in the coming summer.

It must be noted that the Brazilian has recently signed a new deal until 2028 with a €1 billion release clause. The player has no plans to cut short the contract anytime soon.

The youngster, therefore, will continue at Real Madrid and fight for his place in the first team next season. If anything, he will be looking to adapt his game and become versatile – something that may help him get game time in the senior side.

But most importantly, Rodrygo will be looking to end the ongoing campaign on a positive note. A strong season could go a long way in reinforcing the club’s trust in the Brazilian next season.

“Mind games” as Guardiola lavishes praise on exceptional Real Madrid boss

The anticipation at the Bernabeu has reached fever pitch as Real Madrid prepares to play Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League in just a few hours.

Both coaches have a lot of pressure to perform, and Carlo Ancelotti in particular is acutely aware that a mistake against Man City may be the end of his time at the Bernabeu.

But as this pivotal match draws near, the Italian manager has the support of his Man City rival.

Pep Guardiola hails Ancelotti

In the pre-match presser yesterday, Guardiola had notably knocked back implications that Ancelotti is not a tactically sound manager.

“I will never consider that Carlo Ancelotti is a bad coach tactically. See where he put Pirlo in Milan, how he uses Kroos and the position of Bellingham. In Manchester, we consider him to be a great coach, in everything,” Guardiola said.

Now, in an interview with TNT Sports, just before the game, the Man City manager echoed similar appreciation for his Real Madrid counterpart.

Talking about his personal relationship with Ancelotti, Guardiola said, “Exceptional person, we have a good relationship. We don’t see each other much. He’s more experienced, a little older!”

Guardiola went on to highlight how Ancelotti is exceptional at making teams work together as a cohesive unit.

“He’s been in many leagues with success. How he makes teams work, all the success [shows] how good he is,” the coach said.

The bonhomie between Ancelotti and Guardiola, though, might not necessarily reflect on the pitch this evening. In fact, it is expected to be quite a heated encounter between two of the best teams in Europe.

That completes the win! Gakpo merely needs to deliver the ball well enough to evade the defenders—Robertson’s ball is flawless. The Dutchman receives a cross from the left that is 25 yards out, and his header into the bottom corner for a 3-1 score is firm and precise.

Last minute. Grbic flaps at a high cross and Nunez sends the loose, bouncing ball over the crossbar, with plenty of players in the way.

Diaz now releases Robertson down the left but Gakpo and Nunez can’t fashion an opening between them.

Woodwork!

Jones turns well inside the area and feeds Gakpo; the Dutchman’s first shot is blocked and the second fizzes over the crossbar.

Mac Allister then curls a freekick over the wall – and smacks it against the upright!

GOAL! 78’ – Liverpool 2-1 Sheff Utd

Elliott swings a brilliant cross right to left and fellow sub Robertson is running onto it on the volley – but he smashes it past the near post for a goal kick.

Seconds later they attack the box again, it’s half cleared to the edge of the area…and Alexis Mac Allister runs onto it and barrels a hammer blow right into the top corner! Scintillating strike, 2-1 to Liverpool.

Another double sub for the Reds. Gomez and Szoboszlai depart, Gakpo and Curtis Jones are on. The latter makes his return from injury after a lengthy lay-off from just before the Carabao Cup final.

Nunez is fouled just outside the box, quite clearly, but the referee opts against giving anything. The Uruguayan is incredulous.

70’ – Liverpool 1-1 Sheff Utd

Konate is down and injured after Osula caught him and twisted his knee. Needs some attention, the centre-back – but after a few minutes he’s back on his feet.

Elliott crosses from the right and Diaz is ready to pounce – Ahmedhodzic just about clears. Robertson reloads for another cross and another corner but the Blades clear their lines.

66’ – Liverpool 1-1 Sheff Utd

Van Dijk rises to bullet a header at goal off a corner but Grbic parries it around the post! From the next corner Konate almost nods goalwards but the Blades have enough back to clear.

25 minutes or so remaining and Liverpool, now, must certainly raise their game – they’ve allowed it to drift to this point.

McAtee and Brereton Diaz off, McBurnie and Osula on for Sheffield United.

Salah and Gravenberch off, Elliott and Robertson on for Liverpool.

The Reds’ double sub was planned before the equaliser and Klopp went ahead anyway – a surprise to see Salah off perhaps.
