As the Tennessee Volunteers gear up for the final stretch of the 2024-25 season, senior point guard Zakai Zeigler stands out as a pivotal force in their pursuit of a Final Four berth.
Zeigler’s journey from an underrated recruit to a cornerstone of Tennessee basketball exemplifies resilience and determination.
Hailing from Long Island, New York, Zeigler joined the Volunteers in 2021. Despite his late arrival in August of that year, he quickly made an impact with his tenacious defense and playmaking abilities. Overcoming a significant setback in his sophomore year—a torn ACL—Zeigler demonstrated unwavering commitment, returning to the court by the start of the 2023-24 season. His performance earned him the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award and All-SEC honors, highlighting his defensive prowess and leadership on the court.
In the current season, Zeigler has elevated his game, averaging 12.1 points, 8.0 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. His vision and decision-making have been instrumental in orchestrating Tennessee’s offense, while his defensive tenacity continues to set the tone for the team.
A notable example of Zeigler’s impact was during Tennessee’s 77-69 victory over Texas A&M on February 22, 2025. In this high-stakes SEC matchup, Zeigler contributed 16 points, including a crucial three-pointer in the final minute, and a key defensive block, underscoring his ability to perform under pressure.
As his collegiate career approaches its culmination, Zeigler remains steadfast in his mission to lead the Volunteers deep into the NCAA Tournament. His leadership, experience, and competitive spirit make him an indispensable asset as Tennessee aims to secure a coveted spot in the Final Four.
