BREAKING NEWS: Ja Morant Invests $3.6 Million to Build Shelter for Homeless Youth in Tennessee.
In a powerful display of compassion and community leadership, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has announced a $3.6 million personal investment to transform a historic property in Memphis into a shelter for homeless youth. The initiative, which will be named “Morant House,” aims to provide safe housing, education programs, job training, and mental health services for at-risk youth throughout Tennessee.
The NBA All-Star revealed his plans during a press conference Tuesday afternoon, calling the project “one of the most important things” he’s ever done. “Basketball has given me a platform, and I want to use it to change lives,” Morant said. “There are too many kids out here with no roof over their heads, no one to turn to. This shelter is going to be a place of hope and opportunity.”
The 12-bedroom mansion, located in the heart of Memphis, is being renovated to include dorm-style living quarters, a commercial kitchen, learning spaces, and a recreation area. Local nonprofits and mental health organizations will partner with the shelter to provide round-the-clock support for youth ages 14 to 21.
City officials and community leaders praised Morant’s efforts, noting how rare it is for a young athlete to commit so deeply to social impact work. “This goes beyond charity—this is change,” said Memphis Mayor Paul Young.
The shelter is expected to open in early 2026, with construction already underway. Morant says he hopes this effort inspires others to invest in the next generation. “We all have a part to play. I’m just getting started.”
Morant’s bold move cements his legacy off the court as much as on it, proving that true leadership happens when fame meets purpose.
