BREAKING NEWS: Maryland Transfer Ja’Kobi Gillespie Commits to Tennessee.
In a major development for the Volunteers, former Maryland guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie has officially committed to Tennessee. The 6-foot-1 sophomore, who entered the transfer portal earlier this offseason, brings speed, defensive intensity, and valuable high-major experience to Rick Barnes’ backcourt.
Gillespie averaged 8.7 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game last season with the Terrapins, showcasing his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. Known for his explosive first step and relentless energy, he was a key rotational piece at Maryland, often making game-changing plays with his perimeter defense and transition scoring.
Originally from Greeneville, Tennessee, Gillespie’s return to his home state marks a full-circle moment. He was a standout at Greeneville High School before committing to Belmont out of high school, then transferring to Maryland, and now finding his way back to SEC country.
Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes praised Gillespie’s defensive mindset and toughness—hallmarks of the Vols’ identity in recent years. “Ja’Kobi plays with heart, intensity, and a chip on his shoulder,” Barnes said in a statement. “He’s going to fit right in with our culture.”
With Zakai Zeigler returning from injury and Santiago Vescovi’s eligibility exhausted, Gillespie is expected to compete for significant minutes in Tennessee’s backcourt rotation. His quickness and defensive versatility make him an ideal complement to the Vols’ physical, team-oriented style.
Gillespie’s commitment is yet another sign that Tennessee remains a strong player in the ever-active transfer portal era. As the Vols look to build on a Sweet 16 appearance, the addition of Gillespie could be pivotal in their pursuit of a deeper tournament run in 2025.
Tennessee fans will get their first look at Gillespie in orange this fall, where he’ll look to make an immediate impact in the SEC.
