Breaking news: Raven Johnson is running it back!

The South Carolina guard announced she’s putting the WNBA Draft on hold and returning to Columbia for her fifth and final season with the Gamecocks. Johnson, a key piece of Dawn Staley’s backcourt, brings leadership, toughness, and a high basketball IQ that helped power South Carolina to an undefeated national championship season in 2024.

Known for her defensive intensity and playmaking ability, Johnson has been a steady presence for the Gamecocks, often drawing the toughest assignments on the perimeter while orchestrating the offense with poise. She averaged 7.3 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game during the 2023–24 campaign and played a crucial role in the Gamecocks’ dominant postseason run.

Johnson’s return is a massive boost for a team already loaded with young talent and championship experience. With her back in the fold, South Carolina keeps one of the nation’s best floor generals and vocal leaders—qualities that will be vital as the Gamecocks aim to defend their title.

“I’m not done yet,” Johnson said in her announcement. “There’s more I want to accomplish with this team, this program, and these fans. Let’s run it back!”

Johnson’s decision reflects a growing trend among top college stars choosing to stay another year, especially with the NCAA’s extra COVID year of eligibility still in play. For South Carolina, it means another season of elite guard play and a chance to further cement their dynasty under Coach Staley.

With Johnson returning, expectations in Columbia remain sky-high. The Gamecocks will once again be a favorite to cut down the nets—and Johnson will be right in the middle of it all, leading

the charge.
