BREAKING NEWS: the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Vanderbilt transfer forward Jaylen Carey has committed to the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team.

Carey, a 6-foot-8, 265-pound forward from Davie, Florida, played a pivotal role for the Commodores during the 2024–25 season, averaging 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Carey’s decision to transfer to Tennessee marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first Vanderbilt men’s basketball player to transfer directly to the Volunteers. His performances against Tennessee last season were particularly noteworthy; in the Commodores’ victory in Nashville, Carey recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and in the matchup in Knoxville, he tallied 18 points and seven rebounds.

Expressing his motivation for joining the Volunteers, Carey highlighted the team’s culture and the leadership of head coach Rick Barnes. He was particularly impressed by the dedication and camaraderie displayed by Tennessee players Zakai Zeigler and Jahmai Mashack during the postseason. “You could tell in watching how they expressed after the loss… I just wanted to be a part of that,” Carey stated.

Carey is the second transfer to join Tennessee this offseason, following former Maryland guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie. His addition is expected to bolster the Volunteers’ frontcourt depth and provide valuable experience as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
