BREAKING NEWS: The University of Texas has extended women’s basketball head coach Vic Schaefer’s contract through the 2029-2030 season..

The extension, approved by the University of Texas System Board of Regents, includes salary adjustments starting in the 2027-28 season, with Schaefer’s annual compensation increasing by $100,000 each year, culminating in a $2.6 million salary in the final year.

 

Schaefer, 63, assumed leadership of the Longhorns in 2020 after a successful tenure at Mississippi State. Under his guidance, Texas has achieved a 135-34 record over four-plus seasons, highlighted by three Elite Eight appearances and multiple conference titles. This season, the team boasts a 26-2 overall record and is contending for a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

 

The contract extension not only rewards Schaefer’s accomplishments but also provides stability as Texas transitions to the Southeastern Conference. Athletic Director Chris Del Conte emphasized the importance of retaining Schaefer, stating that his leadership has been instrumental in the program’s success and will continue to be vital in the coming years.

 

Schaefer’s coaching career includes a notable period at Mississippi State, where he led the Bulldogs to consecutive national championship game appearances in 2017 and 2018. His overall head coaching record stands at 435-206, reflecting his consistent ability to elevate programs to national prominence.
