Houston ‘is going to run out of money’: Controller issues dire warning
Bregman, the de-facto leader of Houston’s modern-day dynasty, agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night, as first reported by The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. Bregman’s contract includes player opt-outs after 2025 and 2026
Boston’s signing ends an extended waiting period for Bregman, one of the last notable free agents to join a new team. Bregman reportedly turned down a $156 million offer from the Astros earlier this winter. He sought a $200 million contract, then struggled in a market that handed out just one contract of that size to a position player (Juan Soto’s $765 million pact with the New York Mets). Bregman will now man the hot corner for the Red Sox on Opening Day in March, albeit with a final contract that fell below his initial projections.
Bregman is now a $120 million man and a new leading piece in Boston. His former team moves forward with an unfamiliar roster compared to previous seasons.
Not only did the Astros part ways with Bregman this winter. They also traded All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs, removing two key cogs of Houston’s ongoing dynasty. Houston’s brass replaced Tucker and Bregman with corner infielders Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker, and there’s still a chance the Astros add another corner outfielder. Perhaps Houston’s offseason maneuvering keeps the franchise in World Series contention. The American League West crown is still very much an achievable goal. The winter exits still likely leave a bitter taste in fans’ mouths, at least in the early portion of 2025.
The Astros will likely be able to replace much of Bregman’s statistical production in 2025, given Paredes’ pop at the plate. His leadership is a different story.
Bregman was renowned as an integral piece in Houston’s clubhouse, a brilliant baseball mind who aided fellow hitters and pitchers with a wealth of information and insight. Jose Altuve may be the face of Houston’s dynasty. Bregman was the organization’s heartbeat, a culture setter with the play to match his bravado. Who fills that void is now the most pressing question for the Bregman-less Astros in 2025.
