Breaking news:In an unexpected development, The Ohio State University has suspended Marching Band Director Dr. Christopher Hoch, effective immediately. Dr. Hoch has been at the helm of the university’s renowned marching band since 2015, earning national recognition for his innovative show designs and leadership. Under his direction, the band has performed at significant events, including the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship in 2014 and a notable appearance at Wembley Stadium in London in 2015.

The university has not yet provided specific reasons for Dr. Hoch’s suspension. This decision comes shortly after Dr. Hoch’s recent engagement with the Bellefontaine High School Symphonic Band on February 24, 2025, where he collaborated with students in preparation for the Ohio Music Education Association District Contest.

Dr. Hoch’s tenure at Ohio State has been marked by a commitment to excellence and innovation. Before becoming director, he served in various capacities within the band’s leadership, including roles as associate and assistant director. His contributions have been instrumental in elevating the band’s profile on both national and international stages.

The sudden suspension has left the university community and band members seeking clarity. As of now, Ohio State University officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading to this decision or plans for interim leadership of the marching band.

This situation is reminiscent of past leadership changes within the band. In 2014, then-director Jonathan Waters was dismissed following an investigation into the band’s culture.

The Ohio State University Marching Band, often referred to as “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” holds a storied place in collegiate marching band history. The university community now awaits further information regarding the future direction of the band and its leadership.
