On May 10, 2025, a proud chapter in American sports history was written as Coach Dawn Staley was immortalized with a bronze statue in Columbia, South Carolina. The unveiling took place outside Colonial Life Arena, home of the South Carolina Gamecocks, where Staley built a powerhouse women’s basketball program and inspired generations with her leadership, excellence, and unwavering dedication.
The statue captures Staley in her signature poised yet commanding presence, a symbol not only of her historic achievements on the court but also her impact beyond it. As a coach, she led South Carolina to multiple national championships, transforming the program into a national contender. As a trailblazer, she opened doors for Black women in sports leadership and championed equity in college athletics.
Athletic Director Ray Tanner, university officials, former players, and fans gathered in celebration, paying tribute to a career defined by integrity, vision, and resilience. “Coach Staley isn’t just a coach,” said University President Dr. Michael Amiridis. “She’s a cultural icon, a mentor, and a symbol of progress.”
Staley, visibly moved, thanked the community, her players, and her family. “This statue is not about me,” she said. “It’s about all of us who dared to dream and worked hard to make it real. It’s about the power of representation and believing that little Black girls can grow up to lead and to win.”
