Cooper Mays Trades Helmet for Hat, Launches BBQ Empire in Knoxville

Knoxville, TN – A seismic shift has reverberated through the heart of Volunteer Nation, as star Tennessee Volunteers center Cooper Mays has announced a surprising career pivot: trading his football helmet for a chef’s hat and launching his own barbecue restaurant in Knoxville.

After years of anchoring the Vols’ offensive line, Mays is bringing the same grit and precision that made him a force on the field to the world of smoked meats and Southern flavors. His new venture, Mays’ Smokehouse, promises to deliver authentic, slow-cooked barbecue with a personal touch.

“I’ve always loved football, but I’ve also had a deep passion for cooking—especially barbecue,” Mays said. “Growing up in Tennessee, barbecue isn’t just food; it’s a way of life. I’m excited to bring something special to Knoxville and share my love for great food with the community.”

Mays’ Smokehouse will feature a menu inspired by his family’s recipes, including smoked brisket, pulled pork, and a signature “Big Orange Burnt Ends” dish that pays homage to his alma mater. His attention to detail, honed through years of snapping the football under pressure, will now be applied to perfecting every rub, sauce, and smoke ring.

Fans and former teammates have already expressed their excitement, with many eager to support Mays’ transition from the gridiron to the grill. “He was a leader on the field, and I have no doubt he’ll be just as successful in the kitchen,” said one former teammate.

With Mays’ Smokehouse set to open its doors soon, Knoxville’s food scene is about to get a serious upgrade—one smoked rack of ribs

at a time.
