Five-star guard Agot Makeer has decommitted from UConn and committed to the University of South Carolina, choosing the Gamecocks over Kentucky and Georgia.

Makeer, a 6’1″ combo guard from Canada, is ranked No. 4 in the Class of 2025 and is known for her versatility and defensive prowess. Her decision marks a notable shift in the women’s college basketball landscape, as UConn, a perennial powerhouse, loses a top recruit to a rising South Carolina program.

Makeer’s commitment is a significant boost for South Carolina, which has been building momentum under head coach Dawn Staley. Staley’s emphasis on player development and a dynamic, guard-friendly system likely appealed to Makeer, who has demonstrated the ability to play multiple positions effectively. Her experience at Montverde Academy, where she adapted to various roles, and her performance with Canada’s U-17 team, where she shot 34% from three-point range, showcase her adaptability and skill set.

This move also highlights South Carolina’s growing influence in recruiting top-tier talent, as they continue to challenge traditional powerhouses like UConn and Kentucky. For UConn, Makeer’s decommitment is a setback, as they had already signed three other recruits for 2025: No. 27-ranked Kelis Fisher, No. 73-ranked Gandy Malou-Mamel, and Ecuadorian Blanca Quiñonez. Despite these additions, ESPN had ranked UConn’s Class of 2025 as the fifth-best recruiting class nationwide.

Makeer’s decision underscores the evolving dynamics of women’s college basketball recruiting, with emerging programs like South Carolina attracting elite prospects. Her commitment is expected to have a significant impact on the Gamecocks’ future success and further intensify the competition among top programs for premier talent.
