Former WNBA center and South Carolina legend Alaina Coates has rejoined the Gamecocks women’s basketball program as an assistant coach and player development advisor.
The announcement, made earlier this week, marks a full-circle moment for Coates, who starred for the Gamecocks from 2013 to 2017.
Coates cited two deeply personal reasons for her return to Columbia. First, she expressed a desire to honor her late father, Gary Coates, whose unwavering support was instrumental throughout her basketball journey. Gary passed away unexpectedly in 2018, and Alaina sees this new role as a tribute to his legacy. Second, Coates emphasized her commitment to mentoring young athletes, aiming to guide them both on and off the court.
“Returning to South Carolina feels like coming home,” Coates shared. “This program shaped me into the person I am today, and I’m eager to give back by helping the next generation of Gamecocks achieve their dreams.”
During her collegiate career, Coates was a dominant force in the paint, earning multiple All-SEC honors and playing a pivotal role in the Gamecocks’ ascent to national prominence. Despite an ankle injury sidelining her during the 2017 NCAA Tournament, her impact on the program was indelible.
Head coach Dawn Staley welcomed Coates back with open arms, stating, “Alaina’s experience and passion for the game make her an invaluable addition to our staff. Her journey from player to coach will inspire our team.”
Coates’ return not only strengthens the Gamecocks’ coaching roster but also reinforces the program’s tradition of cultivating leaders who continue to contribute beyond their playing days.
