GOOD NEWS: Alabama Women’s Basketball has a proud history, and WNBA Draft Night has provided several special moments that highlight the program’s talent and development.
While the Crimson Tide hasn’t been a perennial powerhouse in the WNBA Draft like some other programs, it has still made a mark on the professional level with notable players getting their name called on draft night.
One of the most memorable moments came in 2000 when Tausha Mills was selected 2nd overall by the Washington Mystics, becoming the highest draft pick in Alabama Women’s Basketball history. Mills, a dominant post presence during her time in Tuscaloosa, went on to play several seasons in the WNBA and overseas, showcasing the level of skill and toughness developed during her college career.
In 2002, forward Navonda Moore made headlines by earning a shot with the Minnesota Lynx after going undrafted, proving that Alabama players can fight their way into the league even without hearing their name on draft night. Her story reflects the grit and determination that define Alabama athletics.
More recently, Jasmine Walker was selected 7th overall in the 2021 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks. Her selection was a major moment for the program, as it marked the first time in over two decades that an Alabama player had gone in the first round. Known for her shooting ability and versatility, Walker represented the resurgence of Alabama Women’s Basketball on the national stage.
These moments are a testament to the program’s ability to develop professional-level talent. As Alabama continues to build under strong leadership, the number of Crimson Tide players hearing their name on WNBA Draft Night is poised to grow. Each draft success not only elevates individual careers but also shines a light on the legacy and future of Alabama Women’s Basketball.
