Kellie Harper, a distinguished alumna of the University of Tennessee and former standout player under the legendary Pat Summitt, has been appointed as the head coach of the University of Missouri’s women’s basketball program, marking a significant return to the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Harper’s illustrious career began as a point guard for the Tennessee Lady Vols from 1995 to 1999, during which she contributed to three consecutive NCAA National Championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998. Her leadership on the court was instrumental in achieving a remarkable 131-17 overall record for the team.
Transitioning into coaching, Harper amassed over two decades of experience across various programs. She served as the head coach at Western Carolina (2004-2009), North Carolina State (2009-2013), Missouri State (2013-2019), and most recently, at her alma mater, Tennessee (2019-2024). Throughout her coaching career, Harper has achieved a 393-260 record and led her teams to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including multiple Sweet 16 berths.
During her tenure at Missouri State, Harper revitalized the program, guiding the Lady Bears to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a memorable Sweet 16 run in 2019. Her success in Missouri underscores her ability to transform programs into competitive forces.
At Tennessee, Harper continued her trajectory of success, leading the Lady Vols to consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in 2022 and 2023. Her teams consistently performed at a high level, reflecting her commitment to excellence both on and off the court.
Missouri’s decision to hire Harper comes after the resignation of Robin Pingeton, who led the Tigers for 15 seasons. Under Pingeton, the program experienced periods of success, including four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2015 to 2019. However, recent seasons have seen a decline in performance, prompting the search for new leadership.
Athletic Director Laird Veatch expressed optimism about Harper’s appointment, stating that her championship pedigree and extensive experience in the SEC make her the ideal leader to elevate Missouri’s women’s basketball program. Harper herself conveyed enthusiasm about returning to Missouri, highlighting the state’s passion for basketball and her commitment to building strong relationships within the community.
Harper’s return to the SEC with Missouri is anticipated to bring renewed energy and competitiveness to the program, aiming to restore its prominence within the conference and on the national stage.
