Knoxville, TN – In a groundbreaking move that has electrified the women’s college basketball community, the University of Tennessee has appointed Kim Caldwell as the head coach of the Lady Vols basketball program.

This decision ushers in a new era, marking the first time since 1974 that the team will be led by someone without direct ties to the legendary Pat Summitt.

Caldwell’s coaching journey is a testament to her dedication and success. Originating from Parkersburg, West Virginia, she began her head coaching career at Glenville State, her alma mater. Over seven seasons, she amassed an impressive 191-24 record, culminating in a Division II National Championship in 2022. Her tenure at Glenville State showcased her ability to build and sustain a winning program.

In her inaugural Division I season at Marshall University, Caldwell led the Thundering Herd to a 26-7 record, securing both the Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament titles. This remarkable turnaround earned Marshall its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997 and garnered Caldwell the Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award.

Caldwell’s coaching philosophy is characterized by a high-octane offense and relentless defensive pressure. Her teams are known for their fast-paced play, aggressive full-court press, and prolific three-point shooting. Under her guidance, Marshall averaged 85.3 points per game, ranking fourth nationally, and forced an average of 24.2 turnovers per game, demonstrating the effectiveness of her defensive strategies.

The hiring of Caldwell signifies a deliberate shift for the Lady Vols, as she becomes the first head coach outside the Summitt coaching tree. Athletic Director Danny White expressed confidence in her ability to restore the program to national prominence, citing her innovative approach and proven track record.

Caldwell herself acknowledged the weight of this new role, reflecting on her receipt of the Pat Summitt Trophy three seasons prior and expressing her excitement to build upon the storied Lady Vol tradition. Her appointment has generated excitement among fans and players alike, who view this as an opportunity to forge a new legacy while honoring the program’s rich history.

As the Lady Vols embark on this new chapter under Caldwell’s leadership, the basketball community eagerly anticipates the impact of her dynamic coaching style on the program’s future

success.
