NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks, forming a new ‘Big 3’ alongside LeBron James.
The trade, finalized on February 2, 2025, saw the Lakers send Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick to Dallas in exchange for Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris .
This unprecedented midseason exchange marked the first time in NBA history that two reigning All-NBA Team players were traded for each other. The deal also involved the Utah Jazz, who received Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks .
Dončić, a five-time All-NBA First Team selection, has been a cornerstone for the Mavericks, leading them to the 2024 NBA Finals. His move to Los Angeles pairs him with LeBron James, creating a formidable duo that has already shown promising chemistry on the court. In a recent game, Dončić delivered a 75-foot pass to James for an easy layup, exemplifying their synergy .
LeBron James expressed his excitement about the new partnership, stating, “Luka’s been my favorite player in the NBA for a while now… It’s going to be special. We’re going to attract a lot of eyes” .
The Lakers’ front office, led by General Manager Rob Pelinka, believes that Dončić’s arrival will shape the franchise for years to come, describing him as “a one-of-a-kind, young global superstar” .
While the trade has been met with mixed reactions, with some Mavericks fans expressing discontent, the Lakers are optimistic about their championship prospects with the new lineup. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Los Angeles to see how this new ‘Big 3’ evolves.
