
South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley has signed a record-breaking contract extension, solidifying her position as the highest-paid coach in NCAA women’s basketball history.
The seven-year deal, valued at $25.25 million, extends through the 2029–30 season and includes a $4 million starting salary, a $500,000 signing bonus, and annual raises of $250,000 .
Since taking the helm in 2008, Staley has transformed South Carolina into a powerhouse, leading the Gamecocks to three national championships (2017, 2022, 2024), six Final Four appearances, and a perfect 38–0 season in 2023–24 . Her overall record at South Carolina stands at an impressive 457–107 .
Beyond her on-court success, Staley is a vocal advocate for equity in women’s sports. She views her contract not just as personal recognition but as a broader statement on the value of investing in women’s athletics. “I do think it represents what can be in other professions that women, for whatever reason, are not paid for doing the same type of work,” she remarked .
Staley’s influence extends internationally; she is set to be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2025, adding to her accolades as a three-time Olympic gold medalist as a player and a gold medal-winning coach .
With this extension, South Carolina not only secures a legendary coach but also reinforces its commitment to excellence and leadership in women’s basketball.
