Tennessee Volunteers women’s basketball head coach Kim Caldwell described the profound and lasting impact that legendary coach Pat Summitt continues to have on her coaching journey.

Though Summitt passed away in 2016, Caldwell shared that her presence still looms large — not only in the program’s legacy but in her personal and professional life. “She works over me every single day, making sure I’m doing things the right way,” Caldwell said, reflecting on how Summitt’s values continue to guide her decisions.

Caldwell, who recently took the reins of the storied Lady Vols program, emphasized that honoring Summitt’s legacy means more than just winning games — it means embodying the principles of accountability, discipline, and excellence that Summitt instilled in generations of players and coaches. “There’s a responsibility that comes with coaching here,” Caldwell noted. “Pat built something bigger than basketball. She built a standard.”

Despite never coaching under Summitt directly, Caldwell has immersed herself in the history and culture that Summitt shaped. She studies film, talks to former players, and constantly evaluates whether her actions align with the values Summitt championed. “Sometimes I’ll stop and ask myself, ‘Would Pat be proud of this decision?’ That keeps me grounded and focused,” she shared.

Caldwell also spoke about the emotional connection she feels to Summitt, saying that she often senses her presence during tough moments — as if the coaching icon is still offering silent encouragement and wisdom. “It’s like she’s still here, watching, reminding me what it means to lead with integrity,” Caldwell said.

For Caldwell, carrying on Pat Summitt’s legacy isn’t a burden — it’s a calling. With reverence and resolve, she’s committed to building upon the foundation laid by one of the greatest to ever coach the game.
