In a significant boost to their 2025 recruiting class, the Ohio State Buckeyes have secured a commitment from four-star linebacker Tarvos “TJ” Alford.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound standout from Vero Beach High School in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, chose Ohio State over other prominent programs, including Miami, Florida State, Tennessee, and UCF.
Alford’s decision underscores Ohio State’s continued success in attracting top defensive talent. Ranked as the No. 72 overall prospect and the No. 8 linebacker nationally in the 2025 class, Alford is also recognized as the second-best linebacker in Florida. His commitment further elevates the Buckeyes’ recruiting class, which now ranks first nationally and within the Big Ten.
Known for his exceptional athleticism and versatility, Alford has been a pivotal force for Vero Beach High School. His junior year statistics are a testament to his impact on the field: 114 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four sacks, six pass breakups, and one interception. These impressive numbers earned him the TC Palm Defensive Player of the Year accolade.
Alford’s playing style aligns seamlessly with the modern demands of college football defenses. His ability to deliver impactful hits, penetrate offensive gaps, and operate effectively in open space makes him a valuable three-down linebacker. Notably, his closing speed allows him to disrupt running plays and pressure quarterbacks, while his proficiency in open-field tackling and coverage positions him as a potential tight end neutralizer.
The addition of Alford complements Ohio State’s existing linebacker corps. He joins fellow commit Eli Lee, with projections placing Alford at the Will linebacker position and Lee at Mike. This strategic pairing addresses the Buckeyes’ need to replenish their linebacker unit, especially considering the potential departures of key players like Cody Simon and Sonny Styles.
Alford’s commitment also highlights the recruiting prowess of Ohio State’s coaching staff, particularly linebackers coach James Laurinaitis. Alford has expressed a strong rapport with Laurinaitis, viewing him as a mentor and “big brother,” which played a significant role in his decision to commit.
With Alford’s addition, Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class boasts a wealth of defensive talent, including five-star cornerbacks Na’eem Offord and Devin Sanchez, and five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair. This influx of elite prospects positions the Buckeyes favorably for sustained defensive excellence in the coming seasons.
In summary, TJ Alford’s commitment not only enhances the Buckeyes’ defensive depth but also exemplifies the program’s dedication to securing top-tier talent. His playmaking abilities and leadership qualities are anticipated to make an immediate and lasting impact on Ohio State’s defense, solidifying their status as a formidable force in college football.
