The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to be active this offseason, and one of the biggest names linked to them is Kevin Durant.

Rumors are heating up after reports surfaced that the Phoenix Suns nearly traded Durant at the February deadline. While the deal ultimately fell through, it reportedly left Durant unsettled. The 35-year-old superstar has long been known for his desire to control his own destiny, and the near-trade may have eroded trust with the Suns’ front office.

The Suns’ early playoff exit has only added fuel to the speculation. With Phoenix facing limited roster flexibility and few tradable assets outside their core stars, moving Durant could help them retool. Meanwhile, the Lakers are in search of a third star to pair with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Durant’s elite shot-making and playoff experience make him a perfect theoretical fit, especially for a team that struggled offensively in key postseason moments.

From a financial standpoint, any trade would be complicated. The Lakers would likely need to package multiple players and draft picks to match Durant’s massive salary. However, they’ve shown a willingness to go all-in during the LeBron era, and Rob Pelinka has pulled off big deals before.

There’s also the question of whether Durant would welcome a move to Los Angeles. He’s known to value basketball legacy and market relevance—two things the Lakers offer in abundance. If Phoenix does decide to break up its Big Three of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, L.A. could be one of the few destinations both parties would consider viable.

While nothing is imminent, the situation is worth watching. With Durant reportedly unhappy and the Lakers seeking a bold move, this could become one of the biggest offseason storylines in the NBA.
