The recent suspension of Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has reignited a viral conspiracy theory involving the Tennessee Volunteers, drawing renewed attention on social media.
Moore’s suspension stems from allegations related to the NCAA’s sign-stealing investigation. According to a draft notice of allegations, Moore is accused of deleting 52 text messages exchanged with former staffer Connor Stalions, who is at the center of the sign-stealing controversy. These messages were reportedly deleted on the same day media reports surfaced about Stalions’ efforts to capture opponents’ play-calling signals. Although the messages were later recovered, Moore faces potential penalties, including a show-cause order and suspension, as he is considered a repeat violator due to prior recruiting infractions during the COVID-19 dead period .
Amid these developments, social media users have resurfaced a conspiracy theory linking Moore to the Tennessee Volunteers. The theory suggests that Moore’s connections to Tennessee’s coaching staff may have influenced the sign-stealing activities. Moore played college football at Oklahoma when Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel was the Sooners’ quarterbacks coach. He was also teammates with current Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle and previously worked alongside Vols linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary at Louisville and Michigan .
While these connections are factual, there is no evidence to support claims that Tennessee was involved in Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal. The resurfacing of this theory appears to be speculative and lacks substantiation.
As the NCAA’s investigation continues, Moore’s future with Michigan remains uncertain. The university and Moore have yet to comment publicly on the allegations. Meanwhile, the online discourse surrounding the conspiracy theory underscores the intense scrutiny and speculation that often accompany high-profile college football controversies.
