UNPRECEDENTED: Jahmai Mashack Breaks 72-Year Drought, Named Tennessee Basketball’s First Torchbearer Since 1953.

Knoxville, TN – Tennessee basketball standout Jahmai Mashack has etched his name into the Volunteers’ history books, not just for his prowess on the court but for his impact beyond it. Mashack has been named a Torchbearer, the University of Tennessee’s highest undergraduate honor, making him the first men’s basketball player to receive the distinction since 1953.

The Torchbearer Award is reserved for students who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and selfless service, embodying the university’s “Torchbearer” creed: “One that beareth a torch standeth in shadow to give light to others.”

Mashack, known for his relentless defense and energy on the hardwood, has made an equally profound mark in the Knoxville community. He has been a champion for youth mentorship, volunteering with local schools and spearheading initiatives focused on education and leadership development. Off the court, his advocacy for mental health awareness and student-athlete empowerment has resonated across campus.

“This award isn’t just about me—it’s about the Tennessee family and the opportunities I’ve had to make a difference,” Mashack said. “I’m honored to carry the torch and continue inspiring others.”

Mashack’s recognition comes as the Vols continue a strong basketball season, reinforcing Tennessee’s culture of excellence in both athletics and academics. His achievement not only cements his legacy in Volunteer history but also sets a standard for future student-athletes to follow.

For the first time in 72 years, Tennessee basketball has a Torchbearer—and in Mashack, the Vols have a true beacon of leadership, service, and

excellence.
