Arsenal have officially secured the signing of Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, activating his £51 million release clause late last night.
The 26-year-old has agreed to a contract that will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2028, with his medical scheduled for today.
Zubimendi’s arrival marks a significant addition to Arsenal’s midfield, especially following the departure of Jorginho to Flamengo. Known for his composure and tactical intelligence, Zubimendi is expected to bring stability and depth to the Gunners’ midfield options. Manager Mikel Arteta has been a long-time admirer of the Spaniard, having successfully persuaded him to join Arsenal after he previously declined an offer from Liverpool.
The transfer is part of Arsenal’s broader strategy to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, with plans to invest approximately £200 million in new signings. In addition to Zubimendi, the club is targeting Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyökeres, valued at £60 million, and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has a £48 million release clause.
Zubimendi’s signing is seen as a statement of intent by Arsenal, aiming to bolster their chances of clinching the Premier League title after finishing as runners-up in the previous season. His addition is expected to provide the team with the necessary depth and versatility in midfield to compete on multiple fronts.
The deal also represents the first major acquisition under the club’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, who replaced interim Jason Ayto in March. Berta is reportedly exploring further signings to reinforce the squad, indicating a proactive approach in the transfer market.
With Zubimendi’s medical set for today, Arsenal fans eagerly await the official unveiling of their new midfield maestro.
