Celtic flop saves the day

CHARLY MUSONDA has finally found his next team after being left without a club in the summer.

The former Celtic flop looks set to join Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta FC after the club announced his signing tonight.

A deal has been agreed for the one-time wonderkid who recently left Spanish side Levante.

He was released by the club at the end of last season and has been on the hunt for his new team ever since.

But he is now expected to be unveiled in Cyprus, subject to a medical.

A statement from Anorthosis read: “Anorthosis Famagusta announces its agreement in principal with football player Charly Musonda. He is expected in Cyprus tomorrow for the medical examinations and the conclusion of the agreement.”

The former Belgian prospect joined Brendan Rodgers at Celtic during the Northern Irishman’s first spell at Parkhead.

He’d been signed by Chelsea as a teenager and spent a year on loan at Real Betis in 2016.

But at the time, Manchester City, Barcelona, Ajax, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool were all interested in his signature.

A lot of hype surrounded the winger when he sealed his 18-month loan at Parkhead.

But he failed to live up to expectations and made only eight appearances – and just TWO league starts – however, he did face Zent St Petersburg home and away in the Europa League.

And he will always be remembered for his stunning assist for Callum McGregor’s goal against the Russian club in the first leg.

After Celtic, he didn’t start another game in almost FIVE YEARS, until he played for Spanish Second Division outfit Levante against Getafe in January 2023.

He was sidelined for two years with a cruciate ligament injury during his loan spell at Vitesse.

During that time, he feared he would never play football again after being given a 20 per cent chance of returning as a professional player.

In an interview earlier this year, he recalled: “They said if I had the surgery, that would probably be the end of my career.

“The problem with your PCL is that as soon as you have surgery, the odds of you coming back, especially with a grade three tear, are slim.

“They said my knee was a very rare injury and that I could forget about being an explosive player and doing the things I’d been used to doing again.”

After a decade at Chelsea he left in 2022 – announcing on Instagram: “Not being able to play for four years has been heartbreaking and soul-wrenching.”

And after making just six appearances in his year at Getafe, the club announced he had been released earlier this month.

His present fitness and whereabouts are unknown – but earlier this year he vowed: “I’ve always said if I can run, I’ll play.

“You’ll find me in League One, League Two or a third division somewhere.
