the US military conducted precision airstrikes against two key targets in Houthi-controlled territory in Sana’a, Yemen.
In a report published on Friday, December 20, 2024, by Iran International, it was stated that Ali Velayati, a well-known foreign policy advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, had levelled severe accusations against Turkey, claiming that it was plotting to increase US and Israeli influence in the Middle East.
Velayati made the accusation that Turkey has helped terrorist organisations in Syria and allowed US military to remain in the area in an article published in the semi-official Mehr News Agency. Given the contentious nature of Turkey’s involvement in the Syrian war, Velayati’s claims are somewhat justified.
A Turkish military campaign against the Islamic State (IS) and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) was launched after Turkey began supporting the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in 2011, marking Turkey’s involvement in the civil war.
Military operations by Turkey in Syria have two goals: first, to topple the Syrian government; and second, to prevent the formation of a Kurdish state along its border. Nevertheless, Turkey has faced criticism from a number of quarters, including Iran, which has charged Turkey with sponsoring terrorist organisations and contributing to regional instability.
Claiming to be acting in the interest of safeguarding Turkish national security and halting the spread of terrorism, the Turkish government has rejected these claims. People in the area are suspicious of the country’s motives due to its ties to Israel and the United States.
Through joint military actions in Syria, Turkey has deepened its links to the United States and Israel in recent years. As a result of their cooperation, Turkey has been accused of acting as a go-between for the US and Israel in the region, an accusation that it disputes with all its might.
According to a report by Iran International on X on Saturday, December 21, 2024, in a deliberate move to disrupt and degrade Houthi operations, the US military conducted precision airstrikes against two key targets in Houthi-controlled territory in Sana’a, Yemen.
The targets included a missile storage facility and a command-and-control facility operated by Iran-backed Houthis.
According to a statement released by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Saturday, the airstrikes were aimed at disrupting Houthi attacks against US Navy warships and merchant vessels in the Southern Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb, and Gulf of Aden.
The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have been accused of launching numerous attacks on ships passing through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
These attacks have raised concerns about the safety of maritime traffic and the potential disruption of global trade.
The US airstrikes are seen as a response to these escalating attacks and a warning to the Houthis to cease their aggressive behavior.
