Another refereeing injustice: Latest VAR controversy against Liverpool

The latest VAR disaster versus Liverpool

Beyond the fact that Luton Town’s opponent lacked strong tactics to halt the Reds, Liverpool’s matchup with them has been among the most challenging for Jürgen Klopp and his team this Premier League season. The same Merseyside players, together with the VAR, kept the outcome from being totally in Liverpool’s favor throughout the game, forcing them to settle for the sharing of points after a one-goal tie.

Tahith Chong’s goal was preceded by a controversial handball that, had the VAR properly reviewed, would have altered the outcome of the game. The offensive players failed to capitalize on crucial scoring opportunities, and although the center of the field was ineffective at starting plays toward goal, Luton’s deadly counterattack ultimately ended up between the goal’s nets under Alisson Becker’s defense.

While Luton Twon reveled in their fleeting victory over Liverpool, the Reds called for a video assistant review (VAR) in response to what appeared to be a handball inside the area following a corner kick. However, typical of Merseysiders, this incident went uncalled and the opposition’s goal was declared legitimate.

This action could have drastically altered the outcome of the match because, had the handball been called, Liverpool would have had the chance to score first. There was even talk of a victory for Liverpool, which would have put them in third place overall with just one point less than Manchester City. This would have had a significant impact because, with the tie at one goal, it would have put the team behind in the race for the championship. This is the second time that the VAR has been used in a match. He commits a grave error against a Liverpool team that ought to be up on more points than it is right now.

Van Dijk suffered yet another injustice at the hands of the referee.

Teden Mengi held the Dutchman with both arms when he attempted to make an aerial ball that was heading toward him, enabling the defender to keep the ball. The Reds captain also suffered an injustice within the opposing area. The referee and VAR did not even study the fall of Virgil, which was caused by the British from Luton.
