The identity of the kidnappers who are holding the father of Liverpool winger Luis Diaz is known, states the Colombian government.
Liverpool star Luis Diaz has broken his silence after the kidnapping of his father in Colombia, pleading with his captors to release him.
Diaz’s parents were abducted at a gas station near Barrancas on Saturday, but his mother has since been released. His father, Luis Manuel Diaz, remains missing, despite a large-scale search by the Colombian authorities.
Diaz, who was absent from Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, has taken to social media to ask for help in finding his father.
According to a report on Skysport, On Tuesday night, Diaz issued a plea for his father’s release on Instagram, along with an image advertising a vigil to be held in his honor. The post read: “March for the release of ‘Mane’ Diaz”. Bring your candle to light the light of hope – FREE HIM NOW
Diaz’s mother and other family members took part in the vigil, which called for the safe return of their loved one.
Luis Manuel Diaz is being held by the National Liberation Army (ELN).
The ELN is Colombia’s major active guerrilla group and has been fighting the state since 1964. It has an estimated 2,500 members.
On Thursday a government delegation which is currently engaged in peace talks with the rebel group, said that it had “official knowledge” that the kidnapping had been carried out by “a unit belonging to the ELN”.
The head of the government delegation negotiation with the ELN, Otty Patiño, said: “We remind the ELN that kidnappings are criminal acts which violate international humanitarian law and that it is their [the ELN’s] duty as part of the current peace process to not only stop engaging in kidnappings but also to forever stamp them out.”
