For generations of football supporters, it was a well-established phenomenon.

The phrase ‘Fergie Time’ is now an accepted part of the football dictionary because of just how often Manchester United managed to score in injury time under the legendary Scot. Time and time again United would strike as the clocked ticked into the dying embers of a game.

Reflecting on his side’s late goals, Ferguson once remarked: “Remember the dressing room? It was electric. Absolutely electric.

“The fans are going home, they can’t wait to get to the pub to talk about it, they can’t wait to tell their wife and their kids what it was like in Old Trafford to score in the last minute. That’s the value.”

But now it is time for United to stand aside. Liverpool are officially the kings of injury-time winners – despite what those from Old Trafford might think.

Not for the first time under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds scored in stoppage time on Saturday to pick up all three points. A late strike from Harvey Elliott secured a comeback victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Klopp’s side initially fell behind to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty, however, Salah restored parity before Elliott struck to send the Reds to the top of the table. But the winning goal also helped the German move ahead of Ferguson in the late goal pecking order.

Liverpool have now scored 17 stoppage time winners since Klopp succeeded Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015, one more than United managed under the now-81-year-old.

The first of Liverpool’s late winners under Klopp came when Adam Lallana scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time against Norwich City in January 2016. The most memorable, however, remains Alisson Becker’s last-gasp header against West Bromwich Albion back in May 2021.

According to Opta, Liverpool have netted 43 winners in the 90th minute or later – 11 more than their closest challengers, Arsenal, and 14 more than United have managed. A huge 40 percent of those goals have come under Klopp.

So it is time to forget ‘Fergie Time’, as we are now living in a world of ‘Kloppage Time’.
