Latest Liverpool news: Darwin Núñez was left amused by Alexis Mac Allister after scoring a wonder-goal in the League Cup. Real Madrid could speed up a transfer plan.
Darwin Núñez was the match-winner last night, securing progress into the League Cup quarter-finals in spectacular fashion. Here’s your round-up of the latest Liverpool news.
After last night, many are questioning whether Liverpool even needs to sign another center-back. It was another impressive performance from Jarell Quansah, who was named Player of the Match in the Virgil van Dijk role.
But strength in depth is no bad thing, and the defense is probably still in need of the most attention in this regard, especially as Joël Matip is currently on a contract which expires at the end of the season. One name that has been mentioned regularly is Gonçalo Inácio.
According to Spanish newspaper AS (print edition via Paisley Gates), Real Madrid is also keen on signing the Sporting center-back. But it is aware of interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United, and may make its move in the January transfer window for fear of missing out.
The report claims Inácio is ‘destined to be dominant over the next decade’, making his release clause of $64m (£52m/€60m) a reasonable price to pay. There is a question mark over why Liverpool or any other apparently interested party did not make a move in the summer, before that clause was increased to its current value, but the Portugal international does look like a very good player.
The conditions were no laughing matter for Liverpool last night. Effectively playing in a storm, Bournemouth got back into the game in the second half, with the wind blowing in a more favorable direction.
Within minutes of Jürgen Klopp introducing Núñez, Liverpool had conceded the equalizer. But the Uruguayan took it upon himself to restore the lead in spectacular fashion, overcoming the weather and the momentum of the game to rifle in a fearsome effort from a tight angle on the edge of the box.
Alexis Mac Allister posted a photo on his Instagram story of the pair celebrating the strike. “My face says it all”, the caption translated, with the Argentine blowing out his cheeks.
Núñez responded with “hahaha” (again translated), followed by something which appears to translate as ‘for me it’s the mates that you make friends with’. Whatever that means, it’s clear the pair are getting along.
