Liverpool open transfer talks with Bayern Munich over Ryan Gravenberch move

Liverpool have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Gravenberch has been high on the Reds' wanted list for several months as part of an overhaul of Jurgen Klopp's midfield options this summer that has already seen more than £110million splashed out on new players.

While a deal is some way from being agreed, negotiations are under way aimed at the two clubs agreeing an acceptable fee for the 21-year-old Dutch international. Reports earlier this summer valued Gravenberch at around £30m.

Having been keen to hold on to the player for much of the summer, Bayern have now given Gravenberch permission to leave provided they can recruit a replacement before the transfer window closes on Friday evening.

It is understood the midfielder is open to a move to Liverpool and is keen to depart Bayern having seen his first-team opportunities limited after arriving from Ajax for an initial £16m last summer. Gravenberch has made only three Bundesliga starts and has been restricted to just a brief substitute appearance this term.

The Dutchman has also been a target for Manchester United – managed by his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag – although the Old Trafford outfit have turned their attentions to Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel spoke ahead of the friendly against Liverpool in Singapore earlier this month of a need for a defensive midfielder, given he already has a plethora of central and attacking midfielders at his disposal. The German side were linked on Wednesday with an interest in Fulham’s Joao Palhinha.
