Jose Mourinho has dispelled speculation that he forced Mohamed Salah out of Chelsea. After several loan spells, the Egyptian winger left Stamford Bridge to join AS Roma on a permanent transfer 2016 after struggling to earn a place in the former Blues boss’ starting lineup.
A year later, Salah swapped the Stadio Olimpico for Anfield – and, as they say, the rest is history. Since touching down in Merseyside, the Liverpool legend has become one of the most decorated players in Premier League history, scoring 150 goals and recording 71 assists in 250 games.

Not only did Salah lead the Reds to their first English top-flight title since 1990, he also helped them win the Champions League in 2019, the UEFA Super Cup in 2020, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in 2022, as well as the Community Shield in 2023. While Chelsea have enjoyed just as much, if not more, success, in his absence, it could have been all so different had the Blues not sold him.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast with John Obi Mikel, Mourinho revealed that he didn’t want to sell Salah despite popular belief. When quizzed on the Egyptian and Kevin De Bruyne, the Portuguese manager said: “To be honest, they left because they wanted to leave.
“They left because they didn’t want to wait. Their history proves that their option was good because they did the career that they did, they reached a high standard. But sometimes kids do decisions like that because they cannot wait.

“They do decisions like that because they don’t have the patience, to be calm and wait for the right moment. And sometimes their career goes in the wrong direction. When people tell me, ‘you let Salah go’, I say exactly the opposite. I bought Salah. I was the one that said, ‘buy that guy’.
