Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has been moved to a hospital in the Netherlands.

This was after he was hospitalised in Croatia after suffering a brain haemorrhage, his wife Annemarie said on Saturday.

Annemarie told Ajax Amsterdam FC that her husband had been moved to the intensive care unit of the hospital in the Netherlands after a brain bleed last week.

The 52-year-old Van der Sar, who was admitted to a Split hospital while on holiday in Croatia, would remain in the intensive care in spite of him being in stable condition and out of immediate danger.

Ajax Amsterdam FC quoted Annemarie as saying: “Edwin has been repatriated from Croatia on Friday evening and is currently in the intensive care unit of a Dutch hospital.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are eagerly awaiting the fixture schedule release for the 2023/24 campaign. The Gunners are set for a return to the UEFA Champions League next term qualification after disappointing 2022/23 campaigns.

Arsenal came up short in their Premier League title race battle with Manchester City last season as Pep Guardiola’s side completed the treble when they beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League final – following their FA Cup success over Manchester United. Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign with West Ham captain Declan Rice a priority transfer target.

Meanwhile, Chelsea begin a new era under Mauricio Pochettino this summer and are hoping to banish memories of a painful first season under the ownership of Todd Boehly that saw his team finish in 12th place. Frank Lampard was brought in on an interim basis following the sacking of Graham Potter towards the end of last season – winning just one of his 11 games in charge.

It’s a similar situation at Spurs with Ange Postecoglou now in charge after he was convinced to leave Celtic and Champions League football with the Glasgow side to move south and take over from Antonio Conte. Harry Kane’s future at the club remains uncertain heading into the summer transfer window with United and Real Madrid among the clubs interested in signing the England captain.

With the official fixture schedule for the 2023/24 campaign set to be released on Thursday, June 15 at 9:00am BST, there are a few key dates for each club to be aware of. Dates for all 380 matches will be confirmed, with some set to be moved for television coverage or because of involvement in cup competitions.

The Premier League season will begin on Saturday, August 12 and conclude on Sunday, May 19. It is the first season since 2019-20 that has not been affected by either the World Cup break or the coronavirus pandemic in terms of scheduling.

Arsenal are set to face City in the Community Shield after finishing 2nd in the Premier League, with Guardiola’s side winning the title and FA Cup. The Community Shield fixture date is yet to be confirmed but it is likely to be played a week prior to the Premier League campaign getting underway – meaning it would fall on the weekend of Saturday, August 5.

Mid-season breaks are back with the festive schedule addressed, meaning no two rounds of matches will take place within 48 hours of each other. As for the domestic and European cup competitions, here is the information we have on the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League start dates and finals so far:

Cody Gakpo changes his mind on Liverpool role after being convinced by Jurgen Klopp

Cody Gakpo has expressed a desire to move from winger to number 9 ahead of a crucial match for the Netherlands since joining from PSV in January.

Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo has admitted he is enjoying his new role as centre-forward and believes it is a position he could thrive in.

Gakpo, 24, joined the Reds from PSV in January for ÂŁ45million and has since scored seven goals and provided three assists in 20 Premier League appearances. The Dutchman finished his season with 20 goals in all competitions after impressing for PSV in the Eredivisie in the first half of the season.

After a slow start, Gakpo managed to adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s aggressive and attacking style of football, but quickly rose from winger to No9. Many believed Gakpo was brought in to fill the void left by Luis Diaz and even Diogo Jota – both of whom were out with long-term injuries at the time.

But Gakpo, who spoke ahead of the Netherlands’ clash with Croatia in the Nations League semi-finals, has mainly played up front during his time with the Reds. “Now that I’m playing at Liverpool, I think it’s a great position,” Gakpo said as quoted by ESPN. “I am convinced that being a striker suits me.

“Guus Hiddink was the first (playing him in the middle). He was a sounding board at PSV for a while, saw me play and said: ‘You have to become a striker or a fake number 9’. I did it. So I don’t want to believe it. And when Roger Schmidt later said the same thing to PSV when he was manager, I was even more stubborn. I felt good on the left wing.

“But at the last World Cup I was already more central on the pitch and permanently with Liverpool over the last six months. It was good. Now I’m excited to improve the position in the near future, also for the club.”

“It was a difficult time when I first came here,” added Gakpo. “He said what he wanted from me. At first, of course, it took some getting used to, but I’ve enjoyed playing in that position over the last few months.”

As for Liverpool, the Reds have just missed out on a Champions League place after finishing fifth in the Premier League in 2022/23, behind Manchester United and Newcastle. Klopp’s men ended the season with a dramatic 4-4 draw at Southampton, but the German was confident about their plans for the future.

“There were moments this season where you thought [the battle] was going to be four years,” Klopp said. “Imagine if we were normal ourselves [at the start of the season], which we absolutely will be next season and we’ll be a contender again. The last eleven games have helped us to recognize it again.

Transfer News: Liverpool eyeing three key additions following Mac Allister capture

Liverpool working on three more senior additions over the summer

Apart from the very obvious need for midfield reinforcements over the summer, Liverpool also look set to bring in a centre-back, who is left-footed to boot.

That is as per Fabrizio Romano who also mentions that the Reds would love to add on to the signing of Alexis Mac Allister and plan to buy two other midfielders apart from reinforcing the defence.

The Reds see themselves linked with the likes of Goncalo Inacio and Peer Schuurs and hopefully, the Reds have a wider spectrum of players to choose from. The links make absolute sense when we understand the larger point of view as to why we need specifically left-sided or left-footed centre-halves.

With manager Jurgen Klopp fixated on giving Trent Alexander-Arnold an opportunity in advanced roles, the long-term appears as though the Reds will move to a back-three setup with Trent and Andrew Robertson as the wingbacks, as we saw in the latter half of the last season, going 11 games unbeaten with the new system.

More additions for the Reds?

Considering we have Ibrahima Konate on the right side of the three centre-halves and Virgil van Dijk in the centre, we need a left-footer to play on that side of Virgil, and more importantly, provide a rock-solid presence at the back for the Reds.

Having said all of this, the priority remains to get on board young midfielders who could create an instant impact for Liverpool to tackle the transitioning phase and the growing average age of the squad.

We could probably have one more window without actively scouting centre-backs, but if we leave it for later, it might prove to become too late.

Hopefully, we can solve the major issue of our midfield as soon as possible so that we can focus on strengthening the rest of the squad as well.

Liverpool begin their pre-season campaign on July 19th, and hopefully, the majority of our signings are already completed and in training so that they understand and align with what the team needs from them.

“He can’t run”- Pundit questions Liverpool’s decision to sign Alexis Mac Allister

Darren Bent questions Liverpool’s decision to land Alexis Mac Allister

Former England international Darren Bent has expressed doubts about the potential success of Alexis Mac Allister at Liverpool. The Argentine international joined the Reds not more than a week ago and marked the beginning of a long pending midfield overhaul at Anfield.

Bent acknowledged Mac Allister’s skill and ability but questioned whether he had the necessary speed and athleticism to thrive in Liverpool’s midfield. He emphasized the importance of pace in Liverpool’s past successes, citing players like Gini Wijnaldum who provided energy and dynamism in the middle of the park. Bent, speaking to talkSPORT via ECHO said this:

“Is he what you (Liverpool) need though? Don’t get me wrong, I like him. I think he’s very good. He can’t run. What’s Liverpool’s midfield problem? You’ve got no legs.

“Don’t get me wrong, he’s an unbelievable midfield player but when I think of Liverpool in the past and what made you so successful, there are people like Wijnaldum that was rattling around like pace, pace, pace in the middle of the park.”

Liverpool’s midfield has been a key component of their style of play under Klopp, with high-intensity pressing and quick transitions being vital to their success. Bent believes that Alexis Mac Allister and his lack of pace could be a hindrance to the team’s overall performance.

While Bent acknowledged the Argentine’s qualities as an “unbelievable midfield player,” he raised valid concerns about Liverpool’s need for players with greater athleticism.

Mac Allister a good fit for Liverpool?

However, it is worth noting that the player is pretty much, a like-to-like replacement for someone like Thiago, whose time at Merseyside remains filled with injury issues. Have no doubts over the player’s quality as he is world-class almost every game, but the lack of availability has hurt the Reds far more significantly than one could imagine.

Ultimately, time will tell whether Mac Allister can adapt and thrive at Liverpool. Klopp and his coaching staff have a reputation for maximizing the potential of their players, and they may have a plan in place to integrate Mac Allister into the squad successfully.

Liverpool fans will be eager to see how Mac Allister performs in preseason and competitive matches. His technical ability and footballing intelligence could prove valuable assets, even if he lacks the outright pace that Bent believes Liverpool needs in their midfield.

The acquisition of Mac Allister signals Klopp’s continued focus on refreshing and strengthening the squad ahead of the new season.

Liverpool’s midfield dynamics will undoubtedly evolve, and it will be fascinating to see how Mac Allister fits into Klopp’s vision for the team’s future success. While there may be some truth in Bent’s analysis, the Reds will anyway sign other players to address different issues.

Benrahma: From Hammers hero to zero
Posted by Gonzo on October 17, 2023 in News, Whispers
I couldn’t help but sympathise with Said Benrahma after the incident with his Algeria manager during a friendly match in Egypt. Given Algeria’s struggling form prior to the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign in November, tensions were evidently high on the touchline.

When Benrahma ignored his manager Djamel Belmadi, the situation escalated. The former Marseille midfielder seemed to attempt a hand shake when Benni walked off the pitch. However, when Benrahma did not reciprocate, Belmadi grabbed the winger’s shirt.

Hammers hero? Benrahma has had a mixed relationship with David Moyes.

This led to an unsavoury face-off between Benrahma and his coach. This incident followed criticism from Benrahma’s teammate, Islam Slimani, who publicly called out Benrahma last week for attempting to take a penalty in the absence of the regular spot-kick taker, Riyad Mahrez. Slimani seemed deeply offended by Benrahma’s perceived disrespect, which quite frankly is ridiculous.

The reactions to both of these incidents were exaggerated. Belmadi should not have resorted to grabbing his player by the shirt and adopting a threatening posture. It was evident that the Algeria manager swiftly remembered the presence of cameras, and the situation was diffused before it could escalate further.

Belmadi squares up to Benrahma following his substitution.

From hero to zero
I feel for Benrahma, a player seemingly lacking appreciation both at club and international levels. It’s a swift fall from grace, considering he scored the opening goal in West Ham‘s Europa Conference triumph, ironically from a penalty. He has since transitioned from being the first-choice left winger to the third choice for the Hammers. It can’t have been easy for him.

Benrahma is a commendable individual, involved in charity work and always accessible to fans when approached. However, I can’t help but think that he needs to find a new club, ideally a place where he is valued and the style of play suits him.

Although he is a skilled footballer, at 28 years old, he should be more than just a substitute. Unfortunately, he will likely have to leave West Ham to secure regular playing time, as he has shown ineffectiveness far too often.

Clearly, he has reached a point where his footballing frustrations are manifesting as petulance. Witnessing a good person go from being a hero to zero is disheartening. I wish him the best in whatever the future holds.

Update emerges on new West Ham United contract for David Moyes
Claret and Hugh’s editor and founder Hugh Southon has shared that West Ham are not planning to hand a new deal to David Moyes at this stage.

The report on 17 October reads that the Hammers wait until Christmas at the earliest in the final year of a manager’s contract.

Moyes was on sack watch a few months ago, but a good European run which culminated in him guiding the side to the Conference League saw him carry on.

Southon wrote, “West Ham will take their time on deciding whether to offer David Moyes a new contract.

“The Hammers are likely to stick to their usual procedure of waiting and seeing in their manager’s final year before coming to a decision.

“David Moyes has has done many good things and David Sullivan stuck with him last season despite some tough times and in pre season when people were panicking.

“However, the club always waits in the last year of a deal until Christmas the earliest or pre-end of season so they will undoubtedly do the same and see how we are doing or have done.”

Fair enough

Last season was undoubtedly spectacular for the Hammers in Europe but domestically it was one of the worst seasons in recent times.

Had UEFA not come up with the idea of the Conference League, there was every chance that Moyes would not have been at the club.

Performances in Europe are one thing but the Hammers need to become a stable league side which is what they are doing this season.

If they are comfortable by Christmas or early next year and there is harmony behind the scenes, there’s every chance that Moyes is given a new deal.

However, if they find themselves in the bottom half and closer to the relegation zone than European places, then things become trickier.

As of now, everyone needs to take it one game at a time and see how things progress in the coming months.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are now frustrated with a £10m player as a behind-the-scenes revelation has emerged from the London Stadium.
