The director of football for the Saudi Pro League, Michael Emenalo, thinks it would be difficult to persuade Mohamed Salah to participate in the league in January.

Saudi Pro League chief confirms Mohamed Salah’s January transfer stance to Liverpool following Al-Ittihad’s bid.

One of the main talking points from this season’s summer transfer window was the Saudi Pro League’s extravagant spending, as multiple clubs from the nation signed some of the biggest players in European football to enormous contracts.

And if Liverpool had not turned down a £150 million bid for Salah from Al-Ittihad during the summer transfer window, there might have been one more well-known player operating in the country. It was understood that the offer included £50 million in add-ons in addition to the £100 million upfront.

In August, Emenalo declared that his league was in the market for “all the top players” and issued a warning that further massive spending was in the works. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former technical director for Chelsea has already acknowledged that his league will not be the first to try to recruit the Liverpool player.

“Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, and players like Mo Salah are players that we are willing to listen to when they show that they are available,” the speaker stated.

However, we also realize that Mo is content with his current situation and that Liverpool is a fantastic, historic club. We really appreciate it, and we don’t want to appear to be placing any pressure on him.

“But if there is any interest to do something, Mo Salah is a player that you want in your league, in any league.”

When asked whether he was ruling out a January transfer for Salah, Emenalo said, “We respect Liverpool, but we won’t take the initiative to do anything in this scenario.

Everybody involved needs to have aligned interests. As a guy that I recruited [for Chelsea] and that I like, it’s very personal.

Nothing that I’m saying is novel or revolutionary—just that your league wants a player with this caliber of talent when he’s available.

“If Mo Salah is available, has an interest to come and everything is aligned, I would be incredibly delighted.”
