Preview: Toulouse vs. Liverpool – prediction, team news, lineups

By Ben Knapton, Senior Reporter | 1d

With victory over Toulouse at Stadium Municipal on Thursday evening, Liverpool will assure themselves of a top-two finish in Europa League Group E with a pair of matches to spare.

The Reds battered the Coupe de France winners 5-1 during their showdown at Anfield two weeks ago, leaving the French side third in the section with four points to their name at the halfway mark.

Match preview

A few months on from the 5-1 crushing of Nantes in the Coupe de France final, which sealed Toulouse’s qualification for the Europa League, Les Violets were on the wrong end of such an emphatic scoreline when they embarked on a sojourn to Merseyside a fortnight ago.

The Kop were shocked as Thijs Dallinga managed to wipe out Diogo Jota’s quickfire opener, but further efforts from Wataru Endo, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch quickly turned Toulouse’s Anfield dream into a nightmare, while also subjecting Carles Martinez’s men to their first continental loss of the new term.

An opening draw with Union SG and 1-0 success over LASK Linz are nothing to be scoffed at for Toulouse, though, and if the former overcome the latter this week, Les Violets will be guaranteed to drop down to the Europa Conference League at the very worst if they can defy the odds and stun the Reds on Thursday evening.

However, defeat at Anfield marked the beginning of a dampening three-game losing streak for Toulouse, who fell to a 3-0 Ligue 1 loss at the hands of Montpellier HSC three days after being crushed by Liverpool, and newly-promoted Le Havre stunned Martinez’s men 2-0 at Stadium Municipal on Sunday.

Les Violets are now winless in five successive matches since edging past LASK on matchday two, and Le Havre’s shock triumph at the weekend also saw Toulouse’s seven-game unbeaten home streak come to an end, further weakening any optimism ahead of the visit of one of the tournament favourites.

One of just three teams with a 100% Europa League record after three matches – alongside Bayer Leverkusen and Roma – Liverpool are just 90 minutes away from guaranteeing a place in the knockout round playoffs, having also taught LASK and Union SG a pair of footballing lessons.

With a five-point advantage over both Thursday’s opponents and Union SG, Liverpool will also be assured of a route into the last 16 with victory if LASK manage to get the better of the Belgian representatives, but their powers waned at Kenilworth Road over the weekend.

In a game that was overshadowed by reports of tragedy chanting, Liverpool cut toothless figures in front of the stingy Luton backline and were stunned by a late Tahith Chong breakaway goal, only for the returning Luis Diaz to net an emotional late leveller amid his parents’ horrifying ordeal in Colombia.

The draw with the newly-promoted Hatters ended a four-game victorious run for Jurgen Klopp’s charges, who have also flattered to deceive across the channel in recent times; each of the Reds’ last four away games versus French teams has seen the Reds fail to emerge triumphant.

However, Liverpool’s five-star performance versus Toulouse saw the Merseyside giants make it three wins from three against the Coupe de France winners, whose only previous home game against the Reds in 2007-08 Champions League qualifying, where an Andriy Voronin strike proved decisive in a 1-0 Liverpool success.

Team News

Toulouse continue to bemoan the absence of winger Zakaria Aboukhlal, who is unlikely to return from his knee injury until after the next international break, while Oliver Zanden (hip) and Denis Genreau (back) are out of contention as well.

The majority of players who began the humbling loss at Anfield were also fielded from the off against Le Havre, albeit with a couple of exceptions, as Frank Magri took the place of Moussa Diarra as Martinez opted for a more attacking approach.

Such a move did not pay dividends, although nor did Martinez’s five-man rearguard at Anfield, and the return of midfield screen Stijn Spierings should see the Violets coach stick with a 4-3-3 system this time around.

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Klopp has conceded that Thiago Alcantara (hip) is unlikely to make his return to action before the start of the New Year, while there is still no timeframe on Stefan Bajcetic’s recovery from a calf concern.

Andrew Robertson is also on the long road to recovery from his shoulder operation, while Curtis Jones was unavailable for the meeting with Luton due to a hamstring issue and is sidelined alongside Virgil van Dijk (illness) and Gravenberch (knee).

Despite a couple of fresh concerns, but Klopp will ring the changes as ever, with matchday three hero Endo among those in line for recalls alongside Caoimhin Kelleher, Harvey Elliott and Diaz, as long as the latter is in the right frame of mind.

Toulouse possible starting lineup:

Restes; Desler, Diarra, Nicolaisen, Suazo; Sierro, Spierings, Casseres Jr; Donnum, Dallinga, Magri

Liverpool possible starting lineup:

Kelleher; Gomez, Matip, Quansah, Tsimikas; Elliott, Endo, Szoboszlai; Doak, Gakpo, Diaz

We say: Toulouse 1-3 Liverpool

A rocking Stadium Municipal atmosphere could potentially spell danger for a second-string Liverpool backline, but Toulouse’s lingering defensive concerns are set to prove costly once again.

The Reds may have left a lot to be desired at Kenilworth Road, but a refreshed set of attacking options should help to maintain their 100% continental start, even if the margin of victory is not as emphatic as it was a fortnight ago.

Toulouse v Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk misses Europa League tie in France

Last updated on1 minute ago1 minute ago.

From the sectionEuropean Football

Colombia forward Luis Diaz is part of Liverpool’s squad for the trip to Toulouse

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has not travelled to Toulouse as the Reds look to secure their spot in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday.

Van Dijk is unwell but should be back in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League home game against Brentford.

Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options are reduced with Ryan Gravenberch (knee) and Curtis Jones (hamstring) missing.

Luis Diaz is part of Klopp’s squad as negotiations to free his father from kidnappers in Colombia continue.

With three wins from three Group E games, the Reds will reach the knockout stages by beating Toulouse again.

Liverpool cemented their place at the top of the group last week when they continued their perfect record with a 5-1 home win over the French side.

“Virgil is a little bit ill,” Klopp said.

“It will not be a big thing but we did not want to have him on the plane, if some others have it as well.

“I have it a little bit but for me it is not a problem, that’s why we left him at home. He should be absolutely all right for the weekend.”

Netherlands international Gravenberch not being fit enough to travel, along with the continued absence of Jones, means Wataru Endo looks likely to start in midfield.

Harvey Elliott, who impressed when he came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at Luton on Sunday, is set to line up alongside the Japan international.

Alexis Mac Allister could start as he is suspended for Sunday’s game against Brentford, and Klopp also has Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and 19-year-old James McConnell as options.

Liverpool will be without midfielder Alexis Mac Allister for the visit of Brentford next Sunday after their disappointing 1-1 draw with relegation battlers Luton. The Reds almost suffered a historic reverse at Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon but substitute Luis Diaz cancelled out ex-Manchester United attacker Tahith Chong’s opener in stoppage time.

Four Liverpool stars dire as Luis Diaz denies Luton historic Premier League win

Luis Diaz’s message to his kidnapped dad after late Liverpool goal vs Luton

Diaz – whose kidnapped father still has not been reunited with the family – scored a 95th-minute equaliser to spare Liverpool a humiliating defeat. But before the frantic finale and even before Chong’s finish, Mac Allister was booked 10 minutes into the second half for a cynical foul on Andros Townsend who was on the counter-attack.

That was his fifth booking in 11 Premier League games as he plays in an unfamiliar No 6 role for Jurgen Klopp. Players who accumulate five yellows in the first 19 matches of the season are automatically handed a one-match ban to be served in the next league game.

Liverpool also have Trent Alexenader-Arnold on three cautions and will be hoping he can keep it clean in the next few fixtures. Argentine World Cup winner Mac Allister, signed from Brighton in the summer, will now be unavailable for the next match.

Liverpool’s next domestic contest sees Thomas Frank’s Bees visit Anfield after their 3-2 defeat of West Ham this weekend, which leaves them ninth. The Merseyside club are third after their late draw.

Wataru Endo will be the main candidate to come into the midfield against Brentford, with Curtis Jones another. Jones missed the clash against Luton due to a minor knock which prevented him from training on Friday. Klopp will hope he can call upon the academy graduate next time out.

Harvey Elliott is the final contender to start with Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic still making their way back from injuries. The Reds still have a game to come before Brentford with a trip to France to face Toulouse in the Europa League group stages.

Mac Allister may now start that match given he will not play at the weekend. Klopp confirmed before the trip to Luton that Thiago will not play any part for his team until 2024.

“With Thiago it’s slightly different. It’s an ongoing thing,” Klopp said. “And we cannot put any kind of pressure there as well, but we expect him to be back probably start of the New Year. It’s now already November, that would mean another four weeks, I would say that’s probably a realistic thing to try.

“We can’t wait, to be honest, to have him back. The player is just exceptional. I understand that you ask, but we can’t now have a week-by-week update, because that will not change a lot in this moment.”

Klopp also said of Bajcetic, who suffered a setback after returning to the team in September: “It’s one of these things. Let me say it like this, Stefan’s quality, potential, talent or whatever, everybody could see and it’s incredible. What a player. But he was not ready yet, that’s how it is. They’re still growing, these boys.

“They’re all different. We have other players with a different [skeletal growth], a different body, and OK that’s fine. With others it’s a bit too early, so we just have to put the brake on again and just wait until that’s all fine. Then Liverpool FC has a wonderful player, a wonderful player, to use. But there’s absolutely no time that we can put on that, and we will not, we just have to wait.

“He’s here, he’s training, he’s doing his stuff. We know how good he is, now we have to make sure that we help him to get a body to show that – and not only once, but then three times a week. And we will get there, very good news for the club. In the moment, we cannot use him and that’s all.”

Following the bombshell news on Tuesday that Liverpool have ended their long-running interest in Andre Trindade, another defensive midfielder closer to home has now appeared on the Reds’ radar.

According to journalist Francois Plateau, Jurgen Klopp’s side are ‘showing serious interest’ in Lucas Gourna-Douath of Red Bull Salzburg in the lead-up to the January transfer window.

Several past players from the Austrian club have gone on to play at Anfield later in their careers, including Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, Takumi Minamino and Dominik Szoboszlai, and the 20-year-old Frenchman could possibly be the next man on that list.

Liverpool are showing serious interest in RB Salzburg midfielder Lucas Gourna-Douath ahead of the January transfer window.

READ MORE: ‘He’s a great player’ – Alexis Mac Allister wowed by 19y/o who Liverpool could sign for a snip

Gourna-Douath is just over 6 foot tall but boasts an imposing presence at the base of midfield, winning 2.73 aerial duels per game over the last 12 months, which places him in the top 4% of positional peers in Europe for that metric (FBref).

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has highlighted some of the youngster’s standout traits, including a ‘high football IQ & maturity’ who combined ‘athleticism & very good technical capacity’ and is a ‘tireless runner with an exemplary work rate’.

These are all attributes which’ll surely appeal to Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters; while he’s already playing at a high level with Salzburg in the Champions League group stage.

Even with the Reds bringing in four midfielders during the summer transfer window, it’s still been apparent this season that we could do with a truly reliable enforcer in the number 6 role, rather than trying to pigeon-hole Alexis Mac Allister into that position.

Now that the pursuit of Andre has abruptly ended, Gourna-Douath certainly looks like he could be worth an enquiry and possibly a tidy offer ahead of the January market.
