VAR explains why they disallowed Cody Gakpo and Elliot’s goals against Burnley

Cody Gakpo’s strike against Burnley was disallowed because the VAR felt there was not enough evidence to overturn Paul Tierney’s on-field decision, the Liverpool ECHO understands
On his 50th appearance for the club, the Netherlands international had thrashed home at the second attempt as Liverpool pressed for a second goal at Turf Moor.
However the whistle was immediately blown by referee Tierney, who signalled for a foul in favour of Vincent Kompany’s side.

In the build-up Darwin Nunez, who had the initial attempt on goal, was judged to have kicked through Burnley left-back Charlie Taylor in the penalty area. The striker rushed to the referee to argue his innocence as replays showed little contact was made.
Liverpool’s number nine was responsible for opening the scoring within the first 10 minutes of the match with an excellent right-footed finish beyond Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford into the bottom corner.
That is how the scoreline remained through to half-time – a narrow advantage for the visitors who amassed 68 percent possession and 14 attempts on goal in the first period, in comparison to the hosts’ two.
A win moves Liverpool top of the Premier League before any of their title rivals kick a ball in the final round of matches in 2023 – specifically above Arsenal, who host West Ham on Wednesday night.
