£107m Chelsea player admits he is “surprised” by what Manchester City have done

Enzo Fernandez has now revealed his surprise at Manchester City signing Claudio Echeverri from River Plate.

The Chelsea No.8 made the comments when speaking to ESPN Argentina.

So, what did Enzo Fernandez say about Manchester City signing Claudio Echeverri? Let’s take a look…

Enzo Fernandez surprised by Manchester City transfer

Well, the £106.8m Chelsea maestro was taken aback by his fellow countryman’s £26m move to the Etihad Stadium.

Fernandez said: “I was surprised, I spoke to him when he went to train with the national team, he’s a great player, he’s still young. He has a long way to go and I will always wish him the best. I would advise him to be humble as he is, to keep working.”

Echeverri will remain with River Plate on loan for the next 12 months, so the Argentina international will not be facing the Argentina U17 international in the Premier League just yet.

Chelsea apparently hurried Manchester City into signing Echeverri

Had things turned out differently, Echeverri could have joined Fernandez at Stamford Bridge.

A story from 90min claimed that Todd Boehly was keen on bringing the 18-year-old to west London as the American continues his youthful recruitment drive at Chelsea.

However, Manchester City are said to have accelerated negotiations to sign Echeverri as Chelsea – and also Barcelona – began to show interest.

Fortunately, Txiki Begiristain managed to secure the South American’s signature, and despite the hefty price tag, it could prove to be a superb bit of business in a few years.

Echeverri has even been described as a mixture of Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, to provide an understanding of just how highly rated the teenager is.

Hopefully, the Argentine continues his rapid development at River Plate across the next 12 months, and can become an important player for Manchester City in 2025.
