Elon Musk has been urged to plough some of his immense wealth into a lower league club if he decides to invest in English football.

The Premier League and EFL is awash with US money as the popularity of the English game explodes stateside. The top-flight is an obvious draw for billionaires given its global profile, but clubs further down the food chain have also become attractive propositions.

Wrexham are the highest profile example of that, having risen from the National League to League One under A-list co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – a journey which has been chronicled in the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary on Disney+.

X owner Musk has flirted with English football before, albeit briefly, after joking in 2022 that he was planning to buy Manchester United – a post which sent Twitter (as it was then) into meltdown.

The Tesla richman, who is worth an estimated £262billion, was asked if he was “serious” about the bid. He eventually replied: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.” He added: “Stand-up is my side-hustle.”

Musk, an ally of Donald Trump, went on to buy Twitter, controversially rebranding it to X. But if he changes his mind about owning a sports team, he should look no further than League Two Cheltenham Town, according to football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson.

The professor of Applied Sports Finance at Sheffield Hallam University says Musk’s ownership combined with the Robins’ idyllic location would draw US fans to the Gloucestershire club, who sit 15th in the fourth tier after being relegated from League One last season.

“If Elon Musk wants to get into football club ownership, Cheltenham Town are an extraordinarily interesting prospect, particularly to the US market,” Dr Jones told OLBG.

“Millions of people in the US love British culture, particularly quintessential Middle England and the Cotswolds where Cheltenham is based.

“You’ve got these beautiful rolling hills in the background, you’ve got the racecourse so there is a really powerful story and a powerful narrative at a club like Cheltenham. They are up and coming and could be a great prospect.”
