Pep Guardiola’s playing career

Pep Guardiola had a playing career that spanned over 16 years, from 1990 to 2006. He joined La Masia as a 13-year-old and came up through the ranks before debuting for the senior team in 1990 against Cadiz after Johan Cryuff watched him impress for Barcelona B.

He became an integral member of Cruyff’s dream team, which won four consecutive league titles and Barcelona’s first-ever Champions League title. He became Barcelona’s captain in 1997 under Luis Van Gaal and held the role until leaving the club in 2001 to join Brescia in Serie A.

After one season at Brescia, he joined Roma, who had a long-standing interest in him and had previously bid for him while he was at Barcelona. He played there for six months before he returned to Brescia. At the end of the 2002/2003 season, he left European football and went on to play for Al Ahli in Qatar and Dorados in Mexico before retiring in 2006.

Guardiola made his debut for Spain in 1992 and went on to feature 47 times for La Roja, scoring five goals. He also represented the Catalonia national team, playing seven friendly games between 1995 and 2005.

Guardiola’s drug charge

Pep’s stint in Serie A was marred by a failed drug test. While playing for Brescia in 2001, Guardiola tested positive for nandrolone, a banned substance.

The Spaniard denied the allegations but was banned for four months. Pep Guardiola became the first player to be convicted for drug-related charges by a new Italian law that criminalised doping. He was handed a suspended sentence, which was later overturned in 2007 after evolution in science helped discover the steroid he was alleged to have taken was not in his system at the time of prosecution.
