BREAKING: Manchester City loses top striker ahead of 2024/25 Season

With barely 5 days to the first match of the 2024-26 English Premier League (EPL) season, clubs are in their final preparations ahead of the kick-off. Latest updates indicate that Manchester City will not be with their top striker Julian Alvarez as he has signed a deal with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid at Metropolitano. From Alvarez sale, Manchester City will receive €75 million plus €20m add-ons.

Born in Calchin, Argentina, Julian Alvarez began his football career as a youth with Atletico Calchin in 2014 before joining River Plate 2 years later. He transitioned to the seniors in 2018 still with River Plate before signing for Manchester City in 2022 who first offered him out on loan to River Plate. Been the first player ever to win the FIFA World Cup and a continental treble in the same season, Julian Alvarez already has a decorated career despite being only 24 years old. Some of his honours include a Argentine Primera Division, Copa Argentina, Supercopa Argentina, 2 English Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup among many others.

Over the 2023-24 season, Alvarez scored a total of 11 goals providing 9 assists in 36 matches. How do you think his departure will affect Manchester City? Sergio Aguero knows a thing or two about being a top-class Premier League striker. He has given his verdict on Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez ahead of the new season.

Sergio Aguero has put his money on Darwin Nunez to hit a rich vein of form for Liverpool, predicting big things for the Uruguayan as Liverpool embarks on a new chapter post-Jurgen Klopp in the 2024/25 season.

Under incoming boss Arne Slot’s leadership, Aguero is backing Nunez to improve. Despite joining the Reds for a hefty $109m (£85m/€100m) from Benfica and contributing a considerable 33 goals and 17 assists over 96 outings, Nunez’s rollercoaster Liverpool tenure hasn’t been without its fair share of scrutiny.

Quick off the mark and a physical presence up top, there’s no denying Nunez’s attributes. Yet his at times wayward finishing and moments where cool heads are needed have drawn ire from fans and pundits alike. That said, Aguero — a bona fide Premier League goalscoring legend — sees a player on the brink of his prime.

During a chat with Stake.com, Aguero expressed his support. “Credit where credit’s due, I do [see Nunez having a good season],” he said. “He’s a dangerous player that’s always prowling the goalposts.

“Each season, he refines his game… and as long as he doesn’t let the anxiety of a dry spell get to him, Darwin will be a prolific goal scorer in due time. Darwin needs time to solidify, and sooner or later, he’ll get there.”

Nunez has rejoined the Liverpool squad after an extended break following the Copa America, where his goals helped Uruguay secure third place. He featured in the Reds’ goalless draw with Las Palmas at Anfield on Sunday.

Amid speculation that Liverpool could further bolster its attacking options, Nunez’s position could be under threat, especially with Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo already competing for a spot in the team, potentially pushing him down the selection hierarchy.

Liverpool hasn’t made any moves this summer transfer window, with its sights set on a number six midfielder instead. Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is wanted.

When quizzed about potential signings before the August 31 deadline, Slot commented on Sunday: “I think as a club like we are, we are always looking if we can strengthen the squad. But it’s not so easy to strengthen the squad if you see both games today.

“I’ve said many times before that I’ve inherited a really strong team and if we can and if we think it’s possible, we will strengthen the squad. But only if we think we can and if it’s possible.”

Liverpool.com says: Heading into the new season, Nunez doesn’t appear to be the first choice. Jota has looked really sharp and he has been in pre-season training for longer. There will, though, be more than enough chances for everyone. When they arrive, Nunez will need to take them (and ideally avoid being offside too many times).
