However – just before Mansour took over – Manchester City were attempting to wrap up a free transfer under the ownership of Thaksin Shinawatra which would have been a quite remarkable move.

As documented by the Daily Mail back in August 2008, the Citizens were interested in taking the man globally known as R9 on a free transfer, after his contract with AC Milan expired.
Ronaldo was recovering from a serious knee injury, but despite an enticing project awaiting him in Manchester, the deal never materialised, and the South American moved back home to sign for Corinthians.
