Pep Guardiola has given a Kevin De Bruyne injury update following Man City’s win over Brentford

Pep Guardiola has explained why Kevin De Bruyne remained on the bench for the entirety of the Premier League win over Brentford on Tuesday night. The reigning champions left it late at Etihad Stadium to pick up an invaluable three points against the Bees in the title race with Erling Haaland on target after a flurry of missed chances from the hosts.

Alongside De Bruyne, Nathan Ake and Jeremy Doku were also dropped from the starting XI that played out a 1-1 draw against Chelsea this past weekend. Any concerns over Doku, given Guardiola’s comments ahead of the game, were removed when the Belgium international replaced Oscar Bobb just past the hour mark, however worries surrounding De Bruyne remained.

Bernardo Silva and John Stones entered the game as doubts but with both starting on Tuesday evening, Josko Gvardiol and Jack Grealish are the only players on the injury list, however they look set to now be joined by De Bruyne. With that said, here is the latest Man City injury news ahead of this weekend’s clash against Bournemouth.

Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne was an unused substitute in City’s 1-0 win against Brentford. The Belgium international was not spotted warming up ahead of the game, nor during the clash when City were in search of a winner.

In his post-match conference, Guardiola said: “We did not use Kevin today because he has niggles in his hamstring position. He’s okay. It’s more caution and prevention than anything. He didn’t feel comfortable and the doctors said there was a little bit of risk. After five months off, we did not take any risk with that.”

Possible return date: Unknown.

Josko Gvardiol

Gvardiol has missed the last three matches because of ankle ligament damage. He was last included in a matchday squad for the 2-0 win over Everton a little over a week ago.

While the injury is far from ideal, is not thought to be serious enough to rule him out for a lengthy period of time, though Guardiola is expecting to be without him for a few weeks.

The City boss, speaking last week, said: “Josko [will be out] two weeks or three weeks. He has [a problem with a ligament] in his ankle.”

Possible return date: Manchester United (H) – March 3.

Jack Grealish

Grealish, like Gvardiol, will missed the fixture against Brentford. He was forced off in the opening stages against Copenhagen in Champions League action. It is hoped he will not be sidelined for too long, though, with City looking at weeks rather than months. However, Guardiola has been unable to put a firm date on his potential return.

“It’s not that much, not that worse than we expect,” the City boss said. “Maybe ten days, maybe three weeks, maybe a month. I think it’s less, so it’s good news.”

Possible return date: Unknown.
