Manchester City failed to repeat their treble heroics of 2022/23 this campaign, winning just one trophy, which was the Premier League title. They finished two points clear of Arsenal in the end, who pushed them all the way but could not overcome the Citizens across the course of the 38-game season.

Although the Premier League season probably got a little too close for comfort for City, they were a dominant force again.

As well as getting the most points with 91, they also had the most expected points according to Understat, with 83xPTS, two more than Arsenal’s 81xPTS. Pep Guardiola’s side also scored the most goals, with 96, as they sealed their fourth title in a row, becoming the first Premier League side ever to achieve that feat.

In the Champions League, City lost on penalties to Real Madrid in the quarter-final, who now have a final to look forward to against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. The Citizens also lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final 2-1, with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo proving to be the difference.

Now, with City aiming to win all trophies again next season, they have already been linked with one Premier League star hoping to take them back to the top in all competitions.

Man City looking to sign Premier League Midfielder

The player in question here is Newcastle United and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães, who could depart St James’ Park this summer. Newcastle could have to sell the Brazilian this summer in order to comply with financial regulations, as this report from The Guardian explains.

This is where City could swoop in and take Guimarães off their hands. According to reports from Spain, the 26-year-old former Lyon man could be “the chosen one” when it comes to player sales at Newcastle.

The report goes on to explain that those clubs interested in signing Guimarães “will try to lower” the release clause in the Brazilian’s contract. As per the report, it is currently worth £100m and expires on the 24th of June.

Guardiola’s side are allegedly “on pole” in the race for the signature of the Brazil international. However, other clubs are also interested, with Arsenal “pushing hard” to sign Guimarães according to TEAMtalk. It could be a club-record transfer for the Gunners, should they bring Newcastle’s number 39 to the Emirates Stadium.

How Guimarães compares to Declan Rice

Since joining Newcastle from French side Lyon in the January transfer window of 2022 for £40m, Guimarães has been a revelation in the Premier League.

In 86 Premier League games so far, he has 16 goals and 14 assists, with the 2023/24 season his best return yet. During this campaign, Guimarães scored seven goals and registered eight assists.

The Brazilian is a wonderful all-phase number eight, and would slot perfectly into the midfield of Guardiola’s team. He is wonderful on the ball, and his progressive nature has been crucial for Newcastle during his time at St James’ Park. He was described as “quite similar to Rice in the way he plays” by Dean Jones in an interview with GiveMeSport.

According to Guimarães’ Fbref stats, he averages 7.80 progressive passes per 90 minutes this season, which ranks him in the top 13% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues this season. Not only that, he averages 1.87 passes into the penalty box per 90 minutes, placing him in the top 4% of midfielders. This could be pivotal at City when having to break down low blocks as they so often do, with opponents sitting deep and looking to hit them on the counter.

Pep Guardiola ‘leak’ linked to 115 Man City charges – Keith Wyness.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed “leaks” about Pep Guardiola’s future are linked to the 115 outstanding financial charges at Man City.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Spaniard’s exit may be choreographed as he looks to avoid an awkward situation if the club are found guilty.

According to the Daily Mail (26 May), Guardiola is “expected to call time” on his Man City tenure next summer – when his contract at the Etihad Stadium comes to an end.

The 52-year-old joined the club eight years ago and has won 15 major trophies in that time.

City face an independent hearing over 115 financial charges which were levelled at them last year – with potential punishments including fines, points deductions or Premier League expulsion.

Guardiola tenure ‘stale’ after new ‘leak’ from Man City, says Wyness

Aside from the investigation, Wyness suggested Guardiola may also feel his time at Man City has become “stale”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is a really interesting situation with this leak now coming out.

“You’ve got to believe it is somehow linked with these 115 charges. I have no idea whether Man City are guilty or not.

“I’m not making any statements about guilt, but Guardiola has said that he would go if they were found guilty.

“It appears to be a planned separation between the manager and the club, and that makes sense from a PR perspective for him to leave before the verdict comes – so it doesn’t look like he’s being forced out.

Manchester City Identify Pep Guardiola’s Replacement: Good Pick By The Citizens?

Manchester City have started preparing for life without Pep Guardiola as he is unlikely to extend his contract. The legendary manager’s current contract runs until the end of the 2024-25 season. While there were speculation that he might leave the club following this season, he confirmed his will to fulfill his contract.

Hence, the Citizens should be ready to sign a new manager to fill the highly designated role. According to Fichajes, the English club have identified Girona manager Michel as one of the possible candidates to fill Guardiola’s shoes at Etihad Stadium.

Michel’s stocks have surged

Michel joined Girona ahead of the 2021-22 season and has done wonders since then. He has inspired the Spanish side to set better standards for themselves. Their best performance came this season as they managed to secure a Champions League berth for the next campaign.

Under the coaching of Michel, Girona fought for the La Liga title this season. They were a serious threat to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona throughout. However, a slip-up towards the business end halted their place to the third position in the points table.

Is Michel good enough to coach Manchester City?

Pep Guardiola, who arrived at Manchester City in 2016, led his side to six Premier League titles and a Champions League. He is a genius and one of the greatest coaches ever the game has seen. Hence, filling his shoes won’t be as easy as it sounds despite taking over a star-studded group.

Michel has a year left on his contract with Girona and hence, it would be ideal to sign him after the end of the next season. Interestingly, the Spanish side are also owned by the same group as of Citizens, which makes his signing earlier.

However, it will highly depend on how the 48-year-old does in the next term. Having no experience of managing a top-tier club could be a hindrance to his appointment.

Manchester United supporters are rejoicing following a 2-1 win against rivals and neighbours Manchester City – but for fans watching the game at FC United it was never in doubt that their team ‘would do them proud’.

Reds from all over Greater Manchester gathered together at the FC United ground in Moston to watch today’s game. Just before kick off flares began to turn the air red and white as the 5,000 fans in attendance waited for the referee’s whistle.

Adrian, match day secretary, of FC United said: “This is the first time we’ve had an event like this. We’ve sold about 5,000 tickets.”

After the Garnacho goal in the 30th minute, the fans erupted into joyous and euphoric chants, screams and applause.

The screams of joy erupted again only nine minutes later when Mainoo, who has been selected for England’s squad prior to the upcoming Euros this June, made it two. The red side of Manchester could barely contain themselves, with flares and flags flying through the air.

However, nerves grew in the second half with City finding their stride after a rough first 45 minutes, with substitution Alvarez and long range shots from Walker putting Manchester United goalkeeper Onana to the ultimate test.

Fans continued to cheer and rally until Jeremy Doku managed to pull one back for the blues in the 81st minute. With seven minutes of added time and the blues piling on the pressure the nerves and tension was palpable with screams of ‘come on!” ringing around the ground.

But by the 96th minute, those watching knew they had done enough and began to storm the pitch, throwing pints, shirts and hats into the air. Together, supporter gathered around the big screen set up by FC United to watch their side clinch the cup and take it back from the blue side of Manchester in the second consecutive Manchester derby FA Cup final after a 142 year wait.

One life long United fan, Sam, said: “I’m buzzing. We needed this, not only to for a bit of a boost after a rough season but to get into Europe. Yeah, I’m happy. Ten Hag has done his job, we’ve won the game and I’ll start the Euros with a smile on my face.”
