Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a move for Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson ahead of next season.

The former Manchester United manager is looking to bolster a number of areas in his squad following an underwhelming first season in charge at Fenerbahce. The Turkish side have been unable to keep up with rivals Galatasaray in the Super Lig and trail by nine points despite having a game in hand.

Ederson, meanwhile, was linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium earlier this year. It now looks like the end of his tenure in the Premier League could be near.

The Brazilian will enter the final 12 months of his deal come the summer after signing a five-year deal back in 2021. Ederson was previously subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League and were rumoured to be willing to offer the 31-year-old a £900,000-a-week deal.

Besides Ederson, Fenerbahce are also targeting Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic as per Turkish outlet Fanatik. The report adds that Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar and Bayern Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick are the back-up options.

After attracting interest from elsewhere last summer, Ederson revealed Pep Guardiola was crucial for him to stay in Manchester another season. “I spoke to Pep, and it was crucial,” he said.

“I’m happy to stay and fully focused on winning more titles here. I also spoke to the board, directors, and teammates, and I’m staying,” the Brazilian said in August.

Guardiola admitted that ahead of that moment, there had been little in the way of conviction that Ederson would remain at the Etihad. “I don’t know – he has to see maybe now other options,” he said during the January window.

“Of course, I’d like him to stay. It depends now on the clubs. I don’t know the situation. No contact in the last days. A question of training and being with us until the transfer window finishes and we will see what happens.”

José Mourinho is known for making bold and strategic moves in the transfer market, and reports suggest that he is now targeting Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Ederson, ahead of the next season. If true, this would be a major transfer story, as Ederson has been a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s success at City.

Why Would Mourinho Want Ederson?

Mourinho, currently managing Fenerbahçe, has always prioritized strong defensive setups, and having a top-class goalkeeper is crucial to his philosophy. Ederson is not just any goalkeeper—he is one of the best in the world when it comes to distribution, shot-stopping, and commanding his box. His ability to play out from the back is a key component of Guardiola’s system, but it could also fit into Mourinho’s tactics, especially if the Portuguese coach wants to build a more possession-based style.

Additionally, Mourinho has often relied on experienced goalkeepers in his teams. At Chelsea, he had Petr Čech; at Real Madrid, he worked with Iker Casillas before replacing him with Diego López; and at Manchester United, he trusted David de Gea. If Mourinho is looking for a goalkeeper to anchor his team for the next few seasons, Ederson would be a logical choice.

Would Ederson Leave Manchester City?

While Ederson remains an elite goalkeeper, speculation about his future at City has been growing. Guardiola’s side has been linked with potential replacements, and Stefan Ortega has impressed whenever called upon. If City are considering a transition in the goalkeeping department, they might be willing to listen to offers for Ederson, especially if a significant bid comes in.

However, leaving a club as dominant as Manchester City for an unknown challenge is not a decision Ederson would take lightly. He has won multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and a Champions League with City, and unless he feels his time at the Etihad is coming to an end, he may not be in a rush to leave.

Financial Implications

Signing Ederson would not be cheap. His contract with Manchester City runs until 2026, and City would likely demand a substantial transfer fee, possibly in the region of £40-50 million. Mourinho’s potential suitors—whether it’s Fenerbahçe or a club in Saudi Arabia—would need to be financially prepared to make such an investment. Additionally, Ederson’s wages are significant, meaning only a club with a strong financial backing could realistically afford him.

Conclusion

While Mourinho’s reported interest in Ederson is intriguing, several factors would need to align for a transfer to happen. City would have to be willing to part ways with a key player, Ederson would need to be open to a new challenge, and Mourinho’s club must have the financial muscle to make the deal happen. If Mourinho does manage to pull it off, it would be one of the biggest goalkeeping transfers in recent years. However, for now, Ederson remains a Manchester City player, and prying him away won’t be easy.
